Need help! What does it take to become a senior?

When I ask for feedbacks from my manager, it’s always good good. I think it’s part of the company’s culture. Managers have more important work to do rather than help some juniors to develop. I am not being pessimistic, but I’ve seen people in the company for more than three years and still are at junior level. I felt myself didn’t really grow much which makes me scared. Most of the time, i am repeating the same thing again and again. I go to meetups, learn online, but I am not a fast learner! I felt like I don’t have enough time to understand one thing, here comes another.

Gotta be 65+, then the theaters will recognize it. Also TC or GTFO.

You know there’s a role between junior and senior? If you aren’t growing. Time to look for a new job maybe?

Bloomberg DcKO84 OP Dec 6, 2018

There is only junior and senior. Which I know is stupid

VMware DunDunDu Dec 6, 2018

It’s all relative. I’ve been senior at one firm only to have been downgraded accepting a job at another. The important thing is you’re growing and learning.

Just leave. Your next job will make you standard software engineer or senior as soon as you move over.

You should learn how to make impact. First make sure that your skip level knows you and knows what you're doing.

Juniper scandeep Dec 6, 2018

Sadly skip level doesn’t give a sh!t here. Wish the skip level and higher ups are more involved with what the people below them do.

What does skip level actually mean?

Literally one of your managers job is to help you develop, not sure where you got the idea it wasn’t. Doesn’t mean all managers are good at it and you should definitely take your own initiative too

Juniper scandeep Dec 6, 2018

Nope. Doesn’t happen here.

Sounds like you made the same mistake I used to, which was to ask for general feedback instead of being more direct and asking what specifically I need to do to get promoted. Some managers just assume you don’t care if you don’t express that intent. I know it’s weird but true.

Bloomberg DcKO84 OP Dec 6, 2018

Yeah that’s a good idea. I need to be more specific. Do you setup goals with your manager for a period of time? If yes, how long?
