Hi. I really need help deciding between two insurance plans. 1. One is from Amazon which basically is a 4000 max out of pocket, about 150 bucks per month premium for my daughter and I and a 2000 deductible for the both of us from Premera. 2. Second option is from Aetna through my partner’s company which is a 3000 max out of pocket, no monthly premiums and I believe a lower deductible too. I would guess 2 is best but i am wondering if there is anything else i am not considering???
- whether your doctor takes each of these insurance plans. - does either include coverage while outside the US? - how good is the out of network coverage? - are there any exclusions or caps on certain types of care? eg mental health - whether you get an HSA which is even better than a 401k for saving on taxes
Ah great points! Thanks!
Typically Premera provides better insurance than Aetna, but I don’t know the specifics of each of these plans.
That depends on whether it’s a self-funded plan or no.
What do u mean by better insurance? If the plans have same deductible, max, etc , what will make one better than the other? (assuming network approx same)
Be sure there isn't a monthly penalty fee for refusing the insurance from your employer to be covered by your partner's plan.
Yeah i didnt think of this one
How come you have 2K deductibles? If you are looking on shared deductible amazon funds 1k
Considering shared deductible plan for an individual, the max out of pocket per year is 2k and amazon would pay 1k correct? So the max out of pocket for an employee would be 1k and anything beyond that would be covered by insurance?
Not out of pocket. Per person deductible is 1k. Amazon pays 500 if they did not change the plan. Out of pocket is pan you can pay after the first 1k you pay 10% for service up to 2k. So 1.5k
You get lowest rates as Single. Since you and child have to be covered, check if your partners company does not impose penalty for carrying you on their plan even though your partner provides insurance. Also, if there are significant healthcare costs, you need to play with right combination to reach maximum out of pocket maximums
Fewer doctors are part of Aetna, so we had to switch a few providers. Aetna doesn't pay much for out of network coverage. My wife took a Snohomish ambulance and Aetna paid $300, we paid $1,100-this after meeting our deductible. Stick with Premera for much broader coverage and more things paid for.
Ok great to know. Premera did have great coverage so i am a bit hesitant to move to Aetna.
Preventive care is likely included (double check, though!) so unless someone has a medical emergency, you would essentially have 0 medical costs for the year with option 2. If either/any of you are undergoing treatment, definitely do the out of pocket calculations for that as well as if your doctors are in network.
