If u can only negotiate one component of ur TC, would you ask for higher base or RSU? What’s the strategy behind it? assuming I am not leaving within a year. Does a company give less annual hike in base if I started with higher base (comparing to the peers in the same level)? Does a company give less refresh if I started with higher RSU? Or it doesn’t matter?
Depends, is the company's stock going up?
Keep in mind that it is 1:4 for base to RSU. For standard 4yr vest, for each $1 of salary you need $4 of RSU to be equivalent. Generally though most companies will give more stock than base.
The company will usually be more willing to negotiate on stock

RSU. There is potential for growth, and the numbers are usually an order of magnitude or two bigger than base increases. I barely notice my base raises after tax, even the 10% hikes.
