Negotiating Salary

I am currently a temp and looking to get hired on permanent within a month or two. I was hired as a Sr Graphic Designer But the position responsibilities are really that of an Art Director or Creative Director. I was to negotiate my salary of that of the latter positions. I currently paid 24/hr but expect an immediate raise when hired full time. Looking to negotiate a salary of $65k+ but I know positions in the area with my qualifications go for $80k+ Any suggestions on how to approach?

1. Get offer from competitor with desired comp 2. Think twice if you really want current employer to match or would rather move to company that already appreciate you enough to offer this comp

Be transparent about your thoughts you mentioned above. You might even find some comparable director positions (like you mentioned) with similar responsibilities and ask about the differences with the Sr GD position so that there is no mistaking the roles and responsibilities they expect of you. That will also help you to know if you'll be getting paid fairly.

That's really low salary for Sr. position. You should ask 150k min.

Southern California

You need to be making more in any sr role in SoCal. Field offers from others even out of state and ask for 100k+

Unless you have another offer, you take what you can get.

Lookup the "briefcase technique" by remit sethi. Short version: bring other job postings with desired comp that also list the same or similar responsibilities.

Thank you, this helps because my basis is simply off my research of the market and the postings I have sent to me every day.

Think about why this company had a temp/contractor doing the role first. They may not be able to afford an Art Director in that market. You can make he case that the market pays this role at the Art Director level, but if the hiring manager can't afford one you may be stuck (at that firm) with the sr designer offer).
