Negotiating job offer via email?!

I was researching BPs for negotiating a job offer and saw a tech recruiter recommend initiating and carrying out negotiation via email. Has anyone been successful with this or do you recommend just doing it over the phone.

IMO Over the phone is more professional

Yes- i think email is a great idea… always you arent rambling and can give concrete reasons why the comp should be higher

For the first negotiation, beyond that phone is the way to go..

Update: Negotiate via phone and follow up by sending out an email on the numbers or your expected range. I made this mistake of not doing so and during second round negotiation the recruiter just turned the story upside down saying “oh you said you will be happy with this number after our previous call and now you are asking more etc”. I had tough time aligning back. So record everything through email !

Thanks! Do u recommend sending this email before an official offer but after a verbal offer? Or wait for official (recruiter said my target range “may” be out of band)

Before the official offer..the point is talk to the recruiter and once you are done with phone . Drop an email on what you discussed and the numbers you expect .. I’m not recommending full negotiation over the email, that doesn’t work it’s crazy. Follow up over the email is my suggestion

Highly advise against. Its is impersonal. My wife had an offer pulled for attempting to negotiate over email some years back.

Thats unfortunate! My experience has always been opposite- get the recruiter in your corner before negotiating. Make them feel like they and you are on the same team with the common goal of getting you hired at a happy comp level.. once that is established- then when you are negotiating an email with detailed reasons which are data based for a higher comp number is highly appreciated by recruiters.
