Nest vs. Google

Nest is owned by Google and I wonder if it makes any sense to try to apply to Nest? Are benefits/salaries comparable? Would be it easier to jump into Google later?

Curios to know Why do you want to move from nest to Google if you get in?Nest has opportunity to make bigger impact(in the future). Google has already made the impact. Waymo Nest and YouTube offers better opportunities

Microsoft tpyo57 OP Aug 22, 2017

I don't think so. Nest can be killed by Google anytime. Look at what happened with Motorola. I'm still curios why people buy Nest thermostats when they can buy a Chinese clone much cheaper. I don't see any future for Nest.

Uber Blindbugs Aug 22, 2017

You dont want the chinese clone to burn / freeze your house down, you like nests software better. Its like asking why iphone when you can get an no name $50 android

Twitter Aquaman Aug 22, 2017

@tp - please don't join nest and screw up my nest thermostat

Microsoft SHzk71 Aug 24, 2017

Oh yeah, join twitter and make sure the stock sinks even more. Something something Glass houses stones. You have a great reputation for having shitty engineering systems. Also, 90% of Twitter Seattle is ex-msft. So shut your pie hole your retarded bird.

Twitter Aquaman Aug 24, 2017

@SHizk I don't even know what triggered you. You should seek help as you don't seem mentally stable

Are Nest employees considered Google employees, or is it a completely different org?

Google Elsquid Aug 22, 2017

Different company altogether

Google vpFb99 Aug 23, 2017

Different company under alphabet. Still have exact same benefits, @google.com email addresses in addition to nest email addresses, levels, and badges.

Facebook nbd Aug 23, 2017

They know people try to do this and block most jumpers.

Google AdJs44 Aug 24, 2017

Better to apply at Google if ur motivation is to get into Google eventually

Google cXip46 Aug 24, 2017

I previously worked for Nest (first a googler, transferred to nest and am back now at google). Nest systems are completely separate from google and nest runs totally independent from google. You have a google badge and your paycheck comes from alphabet but that's about all that feels the same. Transferring back to google was easy for me because I was always a google employee and started there, but others who first were nest employees have had issues. The interview process for nest is different than google and reviews/ perf is also different so feedback doesn't map. This means a lot of folks have had to go through a ton of additional interviews when looking to change. If your ultimate goal is to get to google, just skip nest and go straight to google.

Could you expand on how reviews and performance differ?
