Hey blinders. Recently wrapped up my interviews with Netflix (1 phone screen, 3 tech rounds, 2 culture rounds). Initial feedback from recruiter has been very positive and I've been asked to name a price. How much should I ask for? Based on the crazily high TC posts I've seen on Blind, does it make sense to shoot for the stars around 450k and land at somewhere 350-380k? I'd jump in a heartbeat for 300k+. SWE L5. Current TC: 270. YOE: 6. Los Gatos. #swe #netflix #tc #offer UPDATE: I'm a SWE in a niche field (similar to ML/AI). I think I did well in all of my interview rounds. How does Netflix assess 'personal top of market comp'? Do they use interview performance? Competing offers? My own comp expectation? UPDATE 2: Okay thanks a lot for the suggestion guys. I'm gonna ask for 450-500k citing my niche field, YOE and skills. Will update you guys when I heard back. UPDATE 3: Recruiter called. 570k. All cash. WHAT THE FUCK??? Did I hear it wrong?
What were your interviews like op?
Ask 450k+, they will probably give you 400k
I thought Netflix pays 500k for most roles to start with?
No, wide range from 300k to 600k...
No need to come up with a number. It’s the hiring managers responsibility to do the research and identify what your top of market is. Based on the details you provided I would guess it will be 450 - 500. If you are not satisfied with the offer or curious, you can ask how they arrived at the number of if they can share the data points.
Thanks. Would Netflix even entertain negotiation if one is not satisfied?
No
Tell the recruiter that you expect top of market and you look forward to reviewing the offer. No need to give a number.
Probably between 400 and 500. Maybe more since you're in a specialized field.
You will never get low balled. But after your first raise here, you’ll think they low balled you.
hah this is a good problem to have
You absolutely can get low balled relative to other folks at Netflix (in the same role with similar experience).
They’ll use all of the things you mentioned, and they will try to assess your level as compared to the market data they have for your role. If you have example data that’s favorable, that’s great to share. They won’t lowball you, but don’t come in at 350 because it could pull them to the lower end of the range. If it’s niche enough, they may not have a ton of data and may be wanting to get more info from you. My guess is you’d get between 425-500, but hard to say without knowing the role/team and your skills.
Thanks for the insights. I might as well anchor it a bit higher and hope to land somewhere in between i.e. 450-500k?
If you choose to give them a number, make sure you can give them a reason on how you came up with that number. If you don’t have good reasons / data, it’s likely to have a negative effect.

No need to ask, you ll get your top of market.
Recruiter did mention something along what you said i.e. personal top of market philosophy but was firm on wanting to know my expectation
I mentioned a 300k offer and they still offered me >> 400k.... They won't low-ball you.
