People on Blind- what’s your end game?
Interviewed and got a handful of offers. I think I’m going to pick Netflix. Read their culture memos and loved it. Netflixers: what are your tips for success as a new comer? Is the culture really as cutthroat as it sounds? Interviews/Offers: Stripe/Airbnb: rejected. Airbnb said all positive feedback but no headcount. Airbnb interviews were straight forward and down to earth. Culture rounds were nice and felt really really genuine. Two pre-IPOs, around 300-350k. Interviewed as warm-ups. Salesforce LMTS, ~300k, I knew they couldn’t match Google/Netflix. Just interviewed for the experience. All interviewers were nice and pleasant but the interviews themselves were way too easy, questions lacked structure and felt arbitrary. The Principal MTS I talked to would probably be just at bar for a strong Amazon L5! Facebook E4, down levelled, I just withdrew after interviewing knowing it won’t be able to keep up with rest of offers. I had a super bad interview experience with two interviewers, constant interruptions and rushing. Made you feel like you’re done within 10 mins of talking. Rest of interviewers were nice. Could have been bad apples. Google L4, down levelled, 340k. Toughest interviews. All interviewers were friendly and warm. Extremely lengthy HC and team matching process. Took 1.5 to match with Ads team. Low balled HARD without competing offers. Netflix Senior, 560k all cash. Fair interviews. Interviewers felt close and down to earth. Quick and straightforward process. Netflix interviews are ‘progressive’ i.e. if you don’t pass one round they will not proceed to the next to save time. Current TC: 310. Yoe 10 UPDATE: I just found this GREAT post and am motivated! "Good E5/L5/64/senior SWE: consider Netflix? (Software Engineering)" https://us.teamblind.com/s/bK2Ycjrd #tech #google #netflix #salesforce #facebook #offers
What’s your level in Amazon and how many years in that role?
L5, 3 years
L5? That's not senior
How do you define cutthroat? If you’re fairly independent after a short ramp-up period, you’ll be fine I think. I’ve never worked at Netflix though Also google is downlevel and not lowball I think. For L4, 340k is a good deal.
Thanks, that makes sense. Number is post negotiation. Initial offer was ~260k
Damn shame on Google.
What's the L4 offer split for G? 340k seems too high for L4 tbh
175/15%/~330 GSU front loaded. While L4 offer typically starts way lower (due to low ball), I don’t think mine is ‘too high’ tbh. I’ve seen Google going up to 420k first year with competing offers on Blind. Something like 175/15%/590 GSU/30 sign on
Is that 330k GSUs or 330 stocks ? 330k RSUs is low for L4, you are being fooled with the TC calculation. You are right in the sense that the equity can go upto 500k+. With normal vesting, the TC is 175k + 26k + 82k ~283k , but with front loaded it just fakes the TC to be 340k
The impression I got from reading Blind is that Netflix isn't cutthroat like FB or Amazon. You don't have to work 50 hour weeks or fight and backstab colleagues for biannual PSCs. But you do have to get shit done properly because they are quick to fire.
Additionally, if your team folds you might have to leave the company instead of finding another team
Really? That's pretty bad.
Congrats! Is Netflix also doing leetcoding?
No
Cool
I interviewed with Netflix last year and from what I gathered was that their culture is more about ownership and quality rather than being centered around pip or impact. What I remember specifically was both interviewers responding to one of my questions by telling me that they have never been assigned work and that all of their effort was from initiatives they discovered/pursued. Now that’s design but I imagine the level of autonomy and responsibility for a dev will be close enough. The “keeper test” applies to seniors for sure but from what I’ve heard you’ll know about the pip wayyyy before it happens because the team will communicate with you before a pip is even considered. So if you fail the “keepers test” it’s pretty much on you. Best of luck op!
Sounds spot on. There is no hand holding. You pick and choose what you work on and are accountable for it.
What do product managers do at Netflix?
Which team in Netflix?
Product client engineering
Congrats how was your interview prep like?
All the people who voted cutthroat have you actually worked here or just bullshitting? It’s pretty chill here if you’re good IC. Less process more pay. I don’t see how your other options could be better.
This is great to hear. Can you share some anecdotes or examples? Where were you before Netflix and how that compares?
Will dm
Congrats on your offers and thank you for sharing these data points :)
You’re welcome. Blind helped motivate me so I’m just paying it forward
