Netflix: a culture of lies

I decided to write this post because of the recent firings based on slack conversations. I see the usual (HR) accounts from Netflix defending the story highlighting the BS culture values. I got fired because I openly gave feedback about my manager. My manager and their manager had dealings outside of work and was being protected. Eventually, after several people leaving the team due to bullying (aka writing deliberate bad feedback from power players who had deep inside connections and threatening people to get fired). I escalated multiple levels up the chain over the years and got HR involved as a last gasp measure. My manager got fired because of the feedback I gave but obviously they don't want to encourage peasants to revolt against management, so they fired me saying, my feedback was right but wasn't given appropriately. Just to emphasize, HR sources off the record defended me saying that it was retaliation for giving feedback. Netflix mostly runs like North Korea. Culture is mostly a bunch of stories made up on the fly. There are no rules, only abuse of power. Most of management is corrupt and crooked. This includes Reed, who used company money to help buy a house for the ex-CPO, who hasn't managed to even last a job for more than 6 months in any company. She was absolute shit and protected by Reed for some reasons unknown. This post isn't meant to dissuade anyone from joining the company. I know people meed money to survive, and netflix is a dream for below average people who cannot get equivalent money anywhere else (they will be out here defending with HR). One thing you will notice is that netflix folks will never say anything negative on blind. This is a deliberate outcome; they actually have HR trolling blind and looking to identify disgruntled people and firing them. Netflix folks can check their internal channel for the post about HR creating 10 fake email addresses just for blind usage. They also fired a person long time ago when did a AMA on reddit. Bottomline is "truth must never be spoken about the culture". As for the open culture, emails will repeatedly read "I let go xxx because s/he was expressing frustration". Basically, you keep your mouth shut and work there for the $$$. If you express any concerns about the low quality engineering, bullying by the folks in power, you will be fired right away. I have nothing against the company and made a lot of money but I despise their fake culture PR tactics which basically go against their own culture principles. Happy to regale you folks with more stories. I saw plenty of shit during my stay. I would go public but then I have a family to feed and SV is full of similar crooks. Also, please don't buy Reed's book and make him more rich for his fake stories. TC: ~600k

So are you still using Netflix or not?

PfIU87 OP Jul 17, 2021

never did, except signing up for a few trials to watch 'House of cards' which is more or less the true culture out there.

Isn’t this post able to identify you with high accuracy? I’m sure people at Netflix would have a good idea who you are..

I'm not the only one. Several folks have been fired in similar ways, This includes a few high profile directors who went against their bosses. Folks in Netflix will know these stories.

Nutanix Oauth3 Jul 17, 2021

Even if they do know, who cares. OP already got fired.

I’m sorry you had a bad experience. Mine has been very positive over 3 years. I’m sure some teams differ

I still talk with friends out there. Things have mellowed out. They also have to keep paying more because of their reputation in the valley to get folks to take risk with their culture.

Is Netflix culture really as cutthroat as the culture doc/deck makes it seem to be?

Netflix yvSp15 Jul 17, 2021

Sigh, I am really sorry this happened to you OP, I don't disagree with you for the most part.

Microsoft 🎂🍰⭐️⭐️ Jul 19, 2021

Not surprising to see the lack of self-respect in the SWE community.

Wtf, Uber.

I can corroborate this story. Engineering is poor, politics are high.

Citadel person1000 Jul 18, 2021

Can you give more details? Did you used to work at Netflix?

Snap sjxhebajic Jul 20, 2021

Yes.

Oracle PKsh82 Jul 17, 2021

I am shocked. I hear all these great stories and ultra positive FAANG image of netflix. I can't believe it. I believe you but I hope you understand my shock.

Cults behave exactly the same way. They look great as long as the $$$ keeps flowing. Once the money stops, the story takes a turn. I would suggest you go look at airbnb commentary when things looked bad. All the posters were so unhappy with the leadership, etc. Once they got their $$$, crickets on blind.

Rubrik anon9anon Jul 17, 2021

Yup. Say whatever but a whole lot majority of us are in it for the money. I would guess about 90%, and if the cash is good we shut out hole and put up with a whole lot.

Verizon skydweller Jul 17, 2021

Believable. Politics are rampant there from what I’ve heard through friends.
