Every single anecdote is true in this article. The original draft was even more brutal.

What did they remove

Netflix NFLXnChill Oct 25, 2018

And where did you find the original draft? Link or it doesn't exist.

Fuck this POS paywall garbage. Why are you linking something most people probably don’t have subscriptions to?

Because WSJ is really good compared to the horseshit out there. Maybe FT is better but only slightly.

> She cried all the way home on her six-hour flight to Los Angeles, wondering how she would break the news to her pregnant wife. Dayum...they are even harsh with people in protected classes too

Netflix sounds like a place to spend a chapter of life, meet some great engineers, and recruit them to go do something awesome later.

Netflix NFLXnChill Oct 25, 2018

I think the article is true for the most part. Firing and culture of fear is a real thing. I guess that's what makes Netflix nimble. I think in general, most people are lazy, they either need strong motivation or fear to perform at their best level. First (motivation) is hard to apply generally across thousands of people - everyone has different motivation factor. Fear of getting fired on the other hand is easy and same to everyone. I like it here, a lot more than other places I have worked. Netflix is very different company, people who like it like a lot, those who don't, they hate it.

how’s the TC?

Netflix NFLXnChill Oct 25, 2018

TC depends on team and individuals skill set. Median TC is around ~300k. Everyone is at the same level, so for people with 10+ years of experience, Google or FB will most likely pay more for level 6 and above.

Is Netflix better than or worse than FB when it comes to WLB / Risk of getting fired etc ?

Microsoft vVqw62 Oct 25, 2018

I work at my best when I’m constantly afraid of being fired

just curious- how many h1b visa holders work at Netflix? Constant stress of loosing a job and deportation would take its toll on me.

Netflix NFLXnChill Oct 25, 2018

A lot, including myself. Any top tech company will have a lot of H1Bs. Taking stress and stress management are personal issues and different people cope with it differently. For me, I am sure that firing won’t be a surprise, and I will be able to get a job outside pretty quickly - provided companies are hiring. And even in the worst case, leaving US is not the worst thing that can happen to you, in fact it could be great thing.

For some of us packing bags and fork lifting family with young kids is not easy. But I get your point
