I have been with Salesforce for past 3 years and had multiple promotions in these years. I am thinking of switching jobs. How open would netflix be to someone like me? My areas of interest: big data, distributed systems etc. TC: 250K #hiring #recruiting
Doesn't Netflix interview only ppl with 5 yoe?
Yeah basically my question is that how strict is that criteria. Is that a deal breaker?
I don't think that is true they reached out to me years ago when I had around 2 yoe.
None. Closer to 10.
Did they change the YoE preference recently? They used to hire people with 5 YoE
I got contacted by Netflix when I had 3 yoe. So this is B.S
You've listed some areas of interest. Netflix typically looks to hire people with expertise in one of those areas. It's not really a place where you come to discover your true self. Give yourself some time to become an expert in one area and then you will have a much better experience applying to and working at Netflix.
I see some folks from coding bootcamps as senior software engineers at Netflix. Those folks can't be subject matter experts can they?
I don't think I can ever call myself expert in these areas, or by the time I become one, those areas might be defunct. I am just looking for a new challenging opportunity.
Multiple promotions within 3 years ? That sounds jazz
Yeah, 3/3. Although salesforce lower levels aren't that hard to jump. Associate member of technical staff is a pretty junior title to begin with itself.
Yeah. The SMTS to lmts in a year is the most difficult part. Took me 3 years with much more yoe.
From what I have heard and read, Netflix is a natural selection company. This means that you work with top tier talent and are expected to be as well. You also accept getting let go if they change direction or you are no longer needed but they take great care of you on your exit. To me, I think that is an absolutely fantastic model. Great responsibility at some level of risk with great comp/reward- probably not for non-confident or easily scared folks though. I’d jump in with both feet if you see an opportunity but I’d argue that you would have better luck making your opportunity happen via networking! Good luck OP
So do you join before you've reproduced and killed if you're let go?
👌🏻🔥 best response.
If you’re serious about looking, send me a PM. I work at SoFi as an engineer and we have several positions available
Why is op not serious about looking 🤣
If they are only interested in Netflix.
I would say probability for 3yoe is very low. It could be higher if your technical field is hot and narrow, for example, ML/AI + PhD. But anyway, harmless to give a try right?
It would be an uphill battle. 5 would be easier. But it is worth applying. Main question is whether you have the experience in your specialty and the maturity to make difficult decisions independently. If you do, come interview.
Can you give an example of a difficult decision made independently? Just curious - I want to feel more confident at doing this
It really depends on your role. Director level? Where should the business invest (given uncertainty)? Manager level? How big should team be and how to get the most from them? Engineer level? What project give the best roi and how to design them to balance cost vs future proofing? The decisions at Netflix are not unique. The same decisions are made at any company I worked at. But in my experience, Netflix tends to trust individual employees more. Other companies tend to form committees more and trust in the hierarchy of the organization (PM's define projects, architects form high level design, team leads design their projects, engineers work on their tasks, etc)
Personally found it difficult - even with inside recommendations. They seem to be more of a “we’ll contact you if interest” sort of company. My education is lacking, but was VP level applying for Manager and Technician level roles (with reccs) and not even a recruiter call.
People don’t care about titles at companies they’re not familiar with. Guessing that’s your situation if you want to go from exec to entry level management.
