This weekend was my 3rd time attending Neurips conference and from the conference and exhibition I realised how screwed the ML industry is. From my past experience, I realised there were less company at the exhibition than before. The people who attended were mostly PhD students and less industry folks. A lot of them were begging for a job at the few companies who were there to hire. But the poster session was less overwhelming and less people than the 2019 Vancouver conference. Who went and what do you think? #neurips #apple #google #tech #Amazon #Meta
nature is healing
Travel budgets cut so not as many industry people there (or jobs).
New Orleans is a fun place. Should have explored it instead.
Less people largely because virtual/hybrid is now normalised post covid
To be fair, that's how conferences were before 2012-13. Just discuss ideas, etc. ImageNet changed the field of ML & conferences turned into big events for tech companies.
