TLDR: Manager used his knowledge of my plans to relocate after 1 year of promotion to put me in dev plan, and eventually making me resign. SDE2 CTC - 50 LPA INR YOE - 5 After being promoted, I told my manager that I might relocate to another country after a year (since Amazon has policy of relocation after 1 year). Manager always suggested me to wait for some more time & see. After a year the pandemic happened, so relocation wasn't possible, but I still decided to switch teams within the country. Got interviewed & new manager set up a time to discuss the movement and boom, got to know the new manager can not take me. Had a talk with my current manager and got to know that he had marked me LE already in mid-year OLR, but didn't care to give me feedback or put me in dev plan. I asked him now what & he said I'll have to go through dev-plan. Had a discussion with skip, but all in vain. Mind that, he still didn't put me in dev-plan yet but waited for more time, to screw up my end-year OLR and put me in dev-plan accordingly that I'm marked LE again for next year. Raised voice, but you guys know the outcome. I cleared all the goals (had really stupid ones, not justifiable at all), but got feedback that he now has new concerns (much wow), but still gave me independent big projects. He even mentioned that even if I'm able to get out of dev-plan, I won't be able to switch teams for the next 9 months (totally against company policy, but aligned to his), & would be under constant monitoring for my performance. He indirectly told me it's better to leave Amazon. After this, I did research & got to know it's a common pattern for him & he has done the same things before for other employees in my team & even HRBP or senior manager never helped (heard they go way-back to their previous employers). Now, I realized this is the time for me to leave Amazon. Prepared well, got some national/international offers but due to pandemic, relocation was not happening. So, extended the date of the new joining, was in dev-plan for that period, did nothing substantial (Manager didn't put me in pip, as people started leaving & I said I won't), got my shares & eventually resigned. I think his plan was that if I left in dev-plan or pip, I'll be his URA & will earn him bonus points. The sad part is, apart from the fact that he didn't care about having 1:1s or giving feedback for my performance ever though saying he is here to support me through dev-plan, I wasn't given a farewell or even the team was not told about my leaving. But I guess you get this being stupid enough to trust your manager. Therefore, never trust your manager with your goals. This doesn't end here, actually. I made sure that I tell his truth to all my colleagues after leaving the company, & now many are leaving the team. #amazon #engineering #software
Which company you joined and how tough it is to find a new job immediately.
My new company is coming at top of my post!!
This is Amazon. What did you think would happen?
🤮🤢🤮🤢🤮🥴
Never reveal your plans to your manager anytime EVER. I too learnt it the hardway and trust me - you’ll be an expendable resource the moment you do it. Manager saying “I’m open for any discussion” is all ** . Not sure about other companies but in Amazon, you will be asking for deep sh*t and making your managers evaluation more easy if ever you say you have plans to leave. They have x% PIP/Focus/Devplan target every year. Also, you telling this to your colleagues will not do any good (you are just letting yourself down and nothing else). None of these is gonna make any difference to them once you’re out. Just leave and be happy. Hope you find a better place.
Yes, never reveal. I am doing shit tasks and i thought i will ask my manager, but i know my team dont have any projects to do and no purpose to ask. Its better to change team and company but do not tell ur manager. They are frustrated as* h****, who are technically incompetent and destroy career
Why did u reveal plans to manager? U were being stupid. If u were promoted, means that u were performing well. One of my friend told me that, in Amazon u can change teams without formal full interview loop. What kind of interviews u had with your manager?
Not always. Depends on the team you apply and on the new manager.
How has been your experience with Amazon before this incident? How much do u work a day?
What did you expect from the worst company on the planet filled with entitled managers? Glad you got out of that hellhole.
Are you naive to reveal your plan to your manager, that too in a toxic org like Amazon? It’s good that you told this openly to other team members though, you might feel slightly better if they decide to leave.
this isn’t unique to Amazon, keep it professional and don’t talk about your plans early, not even with “work friends” in your org
This place just keeps getting worse. I hope you find a way out, OP.
Dude why did you even reveal your plans to move outside 1 year after promo. You never reveal your plans to anybody, the least of all to your reporting manager, Amazon or no Amazon. The success of your manager is gauged by his org size, attrition, reportee feedback and the like and you revealing yours plans upfront only sets both of you up for failure. Anyways wish you the very best and hopefully you come of the mess stronger and successful.
This. Your managers job is to run the team. Regardless of friendliness of manager, they are not your career boss just job boss.
I know but I had managers asking these kind of questions to my friends but never backfired. Also, it's something which came out due to other reasons.
