I am working as a quant at a small energy trading hedge fund: my base is 145k and I can get 14% of PnL quarterly minus the seat cost 1MM, so If I make 6 MM Pnl a year, I will receive 700k bonus and my TC will be $845k, but it’s not easy to make such PnL, typically people make 3 MM so TC will be $425 k. On the other hand, I have a data scientist offer at $240k + 60k in RSU and stock options so TC is 300k. But this job is also data science in the field of energy, but it’s a different career path as it’s not a quant/ trading. Which one should I choose given short-term and ling-term perspectives of the career? I’m both interested in quant and data science but quant is less challenging because you solve one problem once and make money off of it but in data science you have to tackle new problems every time! (This is what I think.) Yoe: 3 Degree: PhD #datascience #quant #trading #
Surprised you even ask. Your seat has much higher pv than a ds seat. You move to a bigger fund, you make more. If you fail ds job is waiting for you If you want to be challenged find another trading algo
Thank you, one reason that makes me doubtful is that there is almost no organizational growth in the quant industry, while in DS I can grow to leadership or executive roles. Also the bonus in my current job is iffy but the DS job is paper money.
Big firms like citadel have managerial roles. You can build teams. IC is the common way. You can also become a quant trader

DS offers are a dime a dozen, quant offers are much rarer and have bigger upside
