New Grad SWE Google vs DoorDash

Can't decide between YouTube (Google) and DoorDash for new grad SWE. Previous internship at Google. YouTube - 125k base + 100k RSU + other - San Bruno (right below SF) DoorDash - 135k base + 175k RSU + other - probably NYC WLB is pretty important, but anything 45 hours or less average a week is acceptable to me. TC and financial incentive is a non-factor. Trying to get a better sense between culture (morale), internal mobility (e.g. switching to UX or PM), career growth (skill and mentorship wise), don't know much about YouTube specifically. Also heard the codebase at DD is a mess but not sure how true it is. Also very open to opinions on living in NYC vs Bay Area as an early 20s person, I've worked in the Bay Area plenty but never in NYC. All opinions appreciated, thanks in advance! #newgrad #offer

nyc vs bay area is like best social scene vs the worst. If you are a single male in his 20s, you should probably take this into account

Youtube.

any specific reason?

Both would have challenging engineering problems though? haha honestly no clue how much I should factor long term outlook into this if I don't plan on staying for 5+ years.

are these rsu grants over 4 years or one year

LotusFlare FPhB67 OP Dec 5, 2020

4 haha I thought that was obvious my bad

Lyft bigfoot34 Dec 5, 2020

i think there might be room for negotiation in the stock component of the doordash offer.

NYC >>> SF Youtube >> Doordash especially for new grads as you learn standard software engineering practises. Work in youtube and move to nyc after a year or even earlier

LotusFlare FPhB67 OP Dec 5, 2020

I agree with both of those points. I think my personality and hobbies are much more suited for NYC too, I'm not huge on hiking but do enjoy going out socially. But based on my experience at Google it doesn't seem easy to move to NYC internally, nor is it easy to move within a year or less. Do you mean like finding a job at another company?

You can move to nyc much easily after promo, and though L3 positions are less they prefer folks who have experience with google stack.

OP you got YouTube offer and still contemplating because of extra base and RSU?

LotusFlare FPhB67 OP Dec 5, 2020

Nah it has nothing to do with the finances. Just location and career growth.

If NYC, choose DoorDash. The whole FAANG concept, SF, California, “Silicon Valley” it’s overrated and dead as fuck. I would leave California for NYC in a heartbeat if I could, even if it meant a pay cut.

Citadel WG21 Dec 5, 2020

Why couldnt you?

Golden handcuffs

Facebook intern1 Dec 5, 2020

Please negotiate! DoorDash is giving you almost 2x the RSU, ask google for more then that.

LotusFlare FPhB67 OP Dec 5, 2020

I told them the DoorDash numbers and it didn't change anything lol should I be saying something else?

Amazon SFLOEY Dec 5, 2020

Negotiate with Google. Every other company nowadays is giving higher entry level compensation than them. Google needs to up their entry level comp game if they still want the best talent.

Google always lowballs.
