Hi all, After months of interviewing and studying I was lucky enough to receive offers at some great companies in this terrible economy. I have quite the dilemma deciding between the offers and am curious your opinions (comment why below) What I value in order: -Career Growth / Learning -Culture (interned on a super toxic team at Amazon) -Job security -Comp -WLB: I don’t mind working hard as a junior engineer but I’d prefer having weekends to myself and ideally <= 50 hrs a week About me: I’m a single male 22 years old (interested in women lol) I grew up in the northeast but I like staying in shape and my hobbies align more with west coast weather options Any opinions would help thanks! Update: Choose SpaceX!! 🚀 Thank you to everyone who provided advice! #software #swe #engineering
Meta and NYC is awesome. Congrats.
If you care about work, mission definitely SpaceX. If you care about lifestyle (NYC), high pay and growth Meta is the answer. Fk Goldman.
Meta all day
how did you get Goldman associate at 22 YO ?
Goldman is so hard to get a callback from for ng
Sorry meant Analyst
Only choose Meta if NYC is the priority. Otherwise obviously SpaceX.
For me, SpaceX is unlike anything else out there unless you want to work at lagging companies in the same space (UAL, Blue Origin, etc). Meta is a software company just like the others, and GS is just the big gorilla among other gorillas. SpaceX is truly doing new stuff, trashy leader notwithstanding.
SpaceX is Elon’s company, I’d pass
Not wrong, but SpaceX is still successful, which means I think someone figured out that Elon needs to be kept away from the operations side of things. It's not an easy choice for sure.
FML base salary hasn't increased in at least 5 years.
In terms of experience and growth I'd only go to SpaceX if you want a hardware slant. Meta will generally develop more transferrable skills to other tech companies. Depends on the exact teams of course. Also if you stick around long term SpaceX comp doesn't scale at senior levels with meta. Some people luck out on appreciation but the same is true anywhere.
For the SpaceX case, the stock is what you’re after. I didn’t start too long ago roughly a year and went from a 260k TC to 310k from the stock price jump. WLB depends on the team you’re on but personally my hours are reasonable. Kick ass bonuses will add prob an extra 10-15k to that TC for a SWE 1. Also LA > NY any day of the week COL is shit in both places but in LA at least you’ve got nice weather. I’d go SpaceX for a few years then go to meta and demand a higher salary as a senior (if you aren’t making 1m/yr from stock appreciation like some of the sx veterans)
Did you start as a SWE 1? If so how is your TC 260k? Don’t SWE1 start ~135k?
Started senior, new senior so started at the lower band
Meta is the easy choice here. Are you super passionate about SpaceX’s mission and/or the prospect of working at an Elon-company? If not, no reason to choose SpaceX imo (I say this as someone who got an offer there, but I haven’t actually worked there). I can’t think of a single thing in Goldman’s favor.
Thanks for your perspective. What about stock appreciation and job security? Meta is at ATH and massive layoffs last year. I think SpaceX stock has a lot of room to grow and no layoffs
Tbf Elon seems to be more of a factor on Blind than inside SpaceX. GS is a snoozefest so hard pass. Not sure about wlb at Meta, but NYC is cool and Meta name carries well. SpaceX is a great place for a new grad just because of crazy learning curve and 🔥 reputation for strong technical skills. Our new grad SWEs are $200+ with the stock appreciation and with lots of room to grow (we have twice a year buybacks).
