Hi all, I'm interested in the requirements and process to be a dev at a place like HRT, Jane Street, 2 Sigma, etc. Despite my meme Chevron tag, I actually have 2 faang internships. I also attend a top 20 university. One of the faang teams are extremely strong so I am tempted to return, but if I do, can I still land a high paying job at one of these firms a few years from now? This A-teir team has virtually nothing to do with econ or ML/AI. (I also have a different FT return offer for an ML/AI faang team but it's a fairly weak team imo) Or should I take advantage of lower hiring bars for interns/new grads now? Is there anything I should do to boost my application? I've done my leetcode and am excellent at behavioral interviews.
Id personally take the trading firms right now. You can always switch to FAANG in the future but switching to a trading firm doesn't sound as easy. Plus the strong team you're tempted to return to could always experience reorgs or new management which could make it shitty, so you never know
Top 20 won’t interest trading firms but you can always try
This is just wrong lol
Yeah it's not like being in the top 20 means you are a shoe in but it's more than enough to get looked at if you have other things going for you.
I had only 1 fang internship and went to a T10 school and got interviews with Jane Street and two Sigma. I didn’t do anything special but applied so you’ll likely get interviews at the other places too.
Why didn't you end up working there?
I failed the interviews.
Network, talk to friends about the interview process. Then get a good night's sleep and some luck.
How did you get the Chevron tag though?
I had to start somewhere lol I have blind accounts with the other tags, but this one is too OP
How do you know if a team is strong/ weak as an intern?
I have lots of connection to the industry and was told so. Also # of customers and $$$ the team makes.
Apply, apply, apply. Although if you’re aiming for SWE stuff, maybe you can come back in a couple years, but if it’s for quant/trading stuff, it’s now or never.
