I’m a new grad and an international student. I’ve been waiting for my Canadian employer-specific work permit for 4 months and moved to Canada right after receiving the work permit. After joining the company for 1 month, I got laid off. I gained few experience over the employment and missed out the golden time applying for NG roles. Plus, I need a visa sponsorship so most opportunities do not consider me. Never expected this would happen. I’m struggled understanding why new grads are put on the list. Just because we need time to be trained? Reasonable but brutal. I’ll probably have to apply for another master’s program in Canada and spend 2 more years to study just to get a work permit. The cost of being laid off varies from people to people, but mine is somehow too high to afford. I regret on rejecting Amazon’s offer. Would like to hear some advice or encouragement from this community. I’m so tired now :(
You might be able to rekindle the offer from Amazon? I got several emails from my recruiter after flat out rejecting Amazon’s offer. Have you spoken with the recruiter?
Let me contact them now! Are they hiring freeze?
No I don’t believe so
Hold your head high. You were let go from Meta. I hope you understand that getting into Meta is tough and people will be opening closed requisitions for you to come onboard. Keep applying and know that best is yet to come. DMs are open
I wish I could be more positive at this time😭 Thank you.
Does your job have to be within the same area you studied in school for the visa to be valid (it's the case in the US) and once you have it can it be transferred to a different company? Network quickly and try to find something to keep yourself in the country. Sorry this happened. It's not your fault. Same thing happened to me in the 2008 downturn. I took the weekend to process and jumped on all the networks I had. Also leverage any legal resources out there, there are some free legal volunteers helping NGs in this situation
The good thing is that I can stay legally in Canada until the expiration date of the work permit (can’t work for another employer though). If I’m working for another employer, the employer needs to apply for a new employer-specific wok permit for me which usually takes a few months (it’s too long so most employers don’t do it). You meant legal resources for NG to find a job or anything else?
Thank you for sharing your experience. I’m wondering how the recession in 2022 is compared to 2008?

Make an application for the Canadian PR ASAP. I think you can stay in Canada and even get a bridge visa if you have an application going on.
Thank you! I submitted an EE last month. My score is 473 which is still 20 lower than the current draw.
