Hi, I recently joined and as a new hire, it seems difficult to build relationships with the team members. What are your thoughts on this? Any suggestions?
Have multiple 1:1s, take part in activities. Find org chart, ping people and get to know them.
I started during quarantine too. It was difficult in the beginning not knowing who knows what or awkwardly pinging someone you don't know. But with time and repetition, it gets easier. I just past 6 months on my new team and I can crack jokes when we're video chatting. Just give it time. It's difficult for everyone right now
My approach has been to take a minor L, not overdo it by seeming like a keener organizing events every week, and having a game plan once stuff actually opens up. I am not sure other people want to spend 30 mins on zoom with me to "get to know each other". Just casually getting to know people as you work with them and then when office opens up, make the most of social opportunities
I did 1:1s during my internship but not just with my team but also people in roles I was interested in, kinda fills the social gap as well as becomes useful for you. I highly recommend it!
