New leadership at Netflix

Netflix has new leadership at CPO and CTO. For a company that touts to be the best in class engineers with grueling interview rounds and big compensation packages, I find it very weird for a VP of data, former COO and economic consultant to be the new Netflix CTO. To be clear, I don’t know her, may be she is amazing. But it just doesn’t seem to add up. Netflix engineers what are your thoughts?

She’s incredible. And we fired the dumbass VP Engineering we hired from Amazon. It’s a great week at Netflix

You don’t need to be an engineer to be a good CTO. I think what this new leader brings is really a stellar career of not pretending she’s the smartest person in the room and farming for dissent, and being very approachable for that to work, and finding consensus that aligns with vision. I’ve heard nothing but positives about her and from what I’ve seen in the past few years, she’s very intelligent, eloquent, and effective. When you’re a leader like this, you can really pull collective ideas together rather than being a top down manager.

She’s renewed my excitement about working at Netflix. Seriously, couldn’t have picked a better person to be CTO and so glad they fired DB’s incompetent ass

Stone came to Netflix in 2020 to lead the Data and Insights team, leveraging research, analytics, and data science to improve the user experience for subscribers. Prior to Netflix, Elizabeth led teams at Nuna and Lyft. She’s also worked in finance, both as a trader at Merrill Lynch and as an economist at Analysis Group. Stone holds a B.S. from MIT and a PhD from Stanford University. https://variety.com/2023/digital/news/netflix-eunice-kim-chief-product-elizabeth-stone-tech-1235743397/amp/

ES is every bit as great as others have said. Sharp and competent yet approachable. She was supportive of me and our team when we ran into roadblocks (I’m an IC).

Everyone else has covered it but I’ll just add that it’s a massive win for our engineering org. Period.
