Both full time Information security position. IBM (100k) vs just started startup company (80k 1-5 people) How to choose? New grad 2yrs experience with Amazon internship experience. #tech #cybersecurity #offer
IBM is worse than Amazon dude After IBM the only place you can go next is Oracle or some shit
Oh... but the startup company is really too small, ibm is much more bigger and provide a better compensation
That's not true. You can go anywhere as long as you pass the hiring bar. Plenty of IBMers go to faang...
If you are in information security go for IBM; ask them who will be your mentor; which team it would be- we have a big team. Learn as much as you can and do the job well for your own good. Network. Network. Network.
Thank you so much for your reply and kind words!!
If you join IBM checkout “coachme” in W3 learn anything and everything from ibmers!!! Join all the slack channel on topic that interests you and don’t be shy to ask on channel any question. Plus check out “ ask a hacker” and participate in CTF. If they send you to security boot camp then network with leaders but also the peers. Good luck.
IBM sucks but poll answers here are very dumb.. Comparing a fortune 50 company with a few person startup with no funding and a lower salary is a joke.
IBM 1. Will this startup exist in 5 years? 2. You'll be doing a lot more legwork at the startup for not nearly as much pay. 3. The mentorship opportunities and room for growth can't be found at a startup with only 5 people 4. Higher salary @ IBM
No way am I picking a 5 person company here. IBM all day
The growth potential at the startup is higher. Keep up the interview prep and always be learning new skills. Since it's a startup, you will likely get options. Learn about early exercising options and taxes in general. Talk with an accountant. Unless the company is clearly hitting it out of the park, find a better position in about 2 years. I would work for all equity at a startup over IBM.
Ooh, thank you, definitely will keep learning new skills, the startup looks great, the colleges are great, but it looks like half of the daily job will be like somethings that not for a regular Infosecurity analyst role’s work. ... a mess of project management and having problems in delivery the result, can't see the hope...
Location?
ooh, both are in CA.
Former IBMer here. Don't go to IBM.
Oh, what’s the main reason that you left there?
Honestly, I had an amazing manager that made it great for a few years. She got promoted and my new manager didn't appreciate me. Also got a 35% base increase to leave. IBM under pays. There is a lot of room to learn at IBM and even with low TC they attract some good mentors. You may start higher at IBM but it will barely increase over time. The bonus will never be paid. Edit: just saw you mentioned it's and internship. IBM is decent place to intern. So maybe I would change my hard no based on that.
It depends on the team at IBM and if you’re part of an “in” group. The vast majority of people don’t have much upward mobility at IBM, however there are always exceptions. I was part of an acquisition with an attractive package and went from $200k+ to $360k+ not including bonuses, sales kickbacks, and RSUs in about 4 years. I once accepted an offer with Amazon, but at the last minute IBM countered to keep me. However my path is very rare at IBM. IBM is a huge company and still compensates key people extremely well. However most people work in one of services groups, ie GBS, GTS, etc which pay extremely poorly.
Yup, my package doesn’t have the bonus, RSUs, or any other things, no sign on neither...
Which area of IBM? Whats the start up evaluation? Area of focus? Theres not enough info
I thought you guy will vote for IBM, any commend on why choosing startup?
Why leave amazon for a downgrade?
It’s an internship
