Niching Down/Spotify vs. FAANMG Company

I’m working on transitioning into a creative role in the tech industry. My dream company is Spotify, and my goal is to work for them in either of the following departments/roles: UX Design, Project Management or Brand Partnerships. I’m working on niching down so I can properly tailor my resume and portfolio, but I’m really interested in all three areas. Any suggestions on how to niche down? The second part of my question: Although Spotify is my dream company, I’ve read a lot about how the salaries are not on par with FAANMG companies, and there’s not much opportunity to move up in the company, however, their WLB is pretty good. I’m aiming for a TC package of $150k/yr. Is this reasonable for Spotify and the departments I want to work in, or would I have better luck getting this at a FAANMG company instead? #tech #careerchange #projectmanager #UXdesign #spotifycareers #faang #marketing #salaries

Honest question, why, how and when did Spotify become your dream company?

Might be interested in the music industry. We get a lot of access to information about it and even (well pre covid) get to go to in office concerts.

Okay so I’ve done freelance work in the music industry for some years now (it’s not my main job though). I’ve always known I wanted to do something in the creative/music industry (I did a minor in music), and I’ve always been interested in tech, but didn’t know how to combine the two (until fairly recently). It wasn’t until last year that I really decided I’m going to work on transitioning into the the tech industry, but I still wanted to do creative work. Before I learned about tech, I was wondering if I would really be able to find stability working in music. I use Spotify every day. I love the app. I love the company culture/WLB (what I’ve heard from employees. They have offices in both LA and NYC (where I want to relocate). There is also the option to work remote. I’d be working in the tech industry and I still get to be creative. Sounds like a win all around (to me). But of course I have to consider career growth and salary too, especially i plan on living in an area with HCOL.

That’s awesome. If you are very much interested in Spotify go for it. But, if you want to hit the higher band TCs that the other companies provide, I would suggest to give the interview. There are top music platforms in most of them, Google has YouTube music Amazon has Amazon music Apple has Apple Music If you land an interview with these teams, good. Otherwise, work in any other team you land with, for 1-2 years and make an internal transfer to one of the Music teams.

That salary is very doable. Depends on the level of the role and YoE a bit but very doable especially if you’re looking at NYC and LA
