I was part of Meta layoff of April. I am from India where openly sharing any of your vulnerabilities or misery of life is considered a big No-No. But I thought I am in US and what's the worse could happen, I can deal with anything. So I put my LinkedIn post about layoff. Things actually went great and I already got referral and reach-outs from multiple folks. But my LinkedIn post was also shown to too many random people outside of my network in India. My post started circulating through WhatsApp among my relatives and my neighbors from my parents and similarly on my wife side. People started adding misinformation that I have financial troubles and Visa issues none of which is true - I have great runway to even retire and I have GC. Than the wedding season came and they started harassing my parents and in-laws with misinformation circulated in WhatsApp. They directly started asking my parent in every wedding party about my misery and financial troubles. One guy Mr Sharma (no kidding) even offered his son's help who is in one of the WITCH company in mid-west to get me a job in TCS. I had to take down my post, but it is still circulating widely. I got my first offer soon and I have to tell my parents so that I can relive them from the misery. However, I still cannot put mine on LinkedIn as I would continue interviewing. Lesson learned - You can't escape from the nosy relatives of India even if you have not talked to them for 15-20 years.
Hang in there !
God I love Indians 😂
We need drama in everything like spices in every curry. ~involuntary burp~ ~rando ungle~
lol, Indians are like 80% of Blind comedy. Last week a guy was afraid to initiate s*x with his wife of 2 months (arranged marriage). After that, I've seen it all.
What did you post. You might have claimed you just have 60 days. Liar!
😂😂😂 love it
It was a small, relatively positive message - Got impacted. Looking for new opportunities in ....
No I am going to circulate the blind post in whatsapp. -Your relative

Welcome to the internet buddy
OP rooting for you ❤️
This post is like when celebrities claim they want privacy
C'mon a SWE is a celebrity now?
Indian prince harry
Denial and shaming one for his tough times is true (in India and other places as well). Taking down the post won't help as it would have been screenshot invariably. As someone mentioned, turn blind eye to the stupidity and also educate your parents and in-laws about what's happening in the tech sector in US and some confidence about your savings (don't have to give actual numbers). Sometimes you may have to educate them to handle these questions, which may help them face their circle.
My parents can handle them. But when these guys approach my parents in a wedding party just to upset them, they really touches my nerve.
Why do you care about what they think?
As someone who cares about what others think, but in the opposite way, this is fantastic. I'm into stealth wealth and all about living below my means. I'll splurge, but only for my nuclear family, and I'd like everyone else to think I'm just getting by. But I understand caring about what others think. It's a big cultural aspect and very difficult to escape
It's family bro
Honestly I’m not Indian but as a rule of thumb it’s best not to care about the opinions of people you aren’t close with. Life is too short and everyone goes through tough patches.
Exactly. Had several colleagues wait weeks to post. I had 5 Job offers inside of a single week. Don’t waste time unless you’re completely financially independent.
Yea, but his parents are getting harassed which is lame
