How strong is SWE at GS? Finished a Hackerrank for the company and one of the questions was DP. I did multiple assessments for Tesla, HRT, and Akuna but none of their questions were as hard as GS. Can they get away with asking this type of stuff for an internship Hackerrank?
I’ve worked at Goldman. The IT infrastructure was absolutely horrendous (so is Morgan’s). These companies are doing decently with internal nodejs/front end stuff using onsite NPM etc. Literally everything else is total trash, from their weird/bespoke Unix distributions to their windows thin clients. You can ask for a lot of money compared to a non top tier tech company, but compared to any top tier company the money is usually less, the hours are worse, you have to dress like an asshole, the culture is trash, not that I care about free lunches etc, but you’re def not getting that. I’ve found the developers at these companies are usually the sort of classic neck beards or FOB. It just sucks, don’t do it. Either work for a midsized startup so you can get way too uncomfortably close and drunk with your coworkers, or go to a top tier tech company right away if you can.
See the point is, it's a good point to start. Great salary and there is a name to it. So it works out decent
I’ll keep ur advice to heart. Is this type of stuff standard across finance companies?
Really I got two basic array questions. I finished the two hours test in ten minutes.
I think the problems are randomized. I got a Linked list problem and a variation of coin change. Finished them both because I did them before on LC but I doubt I would have been able to solve them if I didn’t prep. Seems unnecessary to me.
My first was sort an unsorted array and see which item is out of order and the second was a given a k value find equal pairs which Google had a video explaining the most optimal way. I got really really lucky
Has any other comapany reached Out to you after assesment?
Not yet. Why do you ask?
Was doing the akuna and hrt test too, I dont know if I was ghosted or they just need a long time
Goldman sucks. I just hate that name!!
Says Citibank.
Yes, imagine that!
which team did you work for?
I’m currently a new grad at Barclays (developer division). I’m trying my hardest to switch to a tech/FAANG company. It’s not easy. All I can do is CTCI/LC and work on personal projects...people also tend to underestimate how much luck is involved to get into FAANG, and other decent tech firms.
I have a HackerRank with them, can u do mine. I don’t code
Bruh, have you done it yet?
I don’t remember the hackerrank being too difficult. Nonetheless, I luckily made it into Marcus. The hours can be long, especially with that Apple Card launch... but it’s a modern tech stack, pretty autonomous, and growing. Most the people I know that left the team easily hopped to big tech when needed
If they can easily hop to big tech, why not join big tech in the first place?
They did a decent job of convincing me that it would be similar to a good tech company, which is why I joined. I also wanted to be in NYC. I did have close to an offer in SRE for Google in Pittsburgh, and I regret not pursuing it. Don't think it was a huge setback though - I talk shit about GS but I have learned a lot and made decent money.
They do hard hackerranks bc they have no idea how to source actual talent. My team is full of morons who take 10x as long to get anything done as someone competent and they don't communicate when things are going to be late. I'm staying to see if my boss recognizes that I do 70% of the work come comp season. Then we will see. Go to a decent startup or faang if u can. If not, join GS, and leave after a year.
What team?
Don't want to share explicitly - but I'm front office
Fuck I got rejected. That’s weird because I’m sure I solved all the SWE and math questions correctly. Shit stings cus of this blind post 😂😂
part of the reason they suck so much is their recruiting sucks and is hella inconsistent. I know >5 people who were rejected that are much better than my current coworkers. But I'm sorry to hear that, still sucks
thank you man. no hard feelings because I’m sure they had a lot of applicants and they needed to sort them out somehow. Can only try again next year
Inside GS you'll be using a shit tool called Slang on an editor that would make TurboC look awesome It's not worth it
Oh that slang shit remember turning down an offer cause they explained what it was
Slang is very good and I enjoyed using it. Use the best tool for the job and slang is the best within GS.
