Hi all - I have a non tech background and have been doing business roles in tech for the last five years. Recently I was part of Covid related lay offs and have been looking at roles but honestly am not finding anything that would be exciting or I would have motivation to do. I have always been analytically inclined and am interested in pursuing a Masters in CS as I want to 1- build a more concrete skill set (with developers, designers, and marketers as 3 sides to the spectrum at tech companies, as a bizops/ strategy person, I sometimes feel I’m not adding as much value as I could). 2- I want to be in a career path that helps me feel I am adding value to this world / create something new and I feel having technical skills would give me the ability to do that and eventually pursue ML/ AI and work on stuff that actually matters (probably naive idk) 3- I also believe it would give me a lot more flexibility when it comes to work as startups exploring new ideas are always hiring for developers vs business roles are only hired for towards the end. Questions: 1- Are Masters CS students viewed by companies in the same manner as students that do CS in undergrad? I want to ensure I am able to get a job after since I will be taking out loans to go to grad school. 2- Since many on this app are high up enough in roles to be involved in recruiting, which universities are generally considered ‘good unis’ for this? 3- Any other thoughts on what I posted above. I understand I may have a very naive outlook on CS as a field and would love to hear thoughts from those who are in it. Thankyou! 28F. UPenn undergrad (Econ major). Non US. YOE: 5.
If your end goal is to get a job as a SWE, I would recommend independently learning programming and practicing leetcode questions. Masters in CS is more theoretical and does not necessarily help that much with day to day SWE work. I also have a non-CS undergrad, but managed to get interviews without much tech experience on my resume. I started a part time Masters in CS through Columbia since my previous company reimbursed graduate education fully, but stopped after like 18 credits (honestly very doable even without undergrad in CS). I’ve heard great things about the Georgia Tech masters in CS and it’s way more affordable if you’re set on grad school!

Similar background but with work experience in manufacturing, not in tech at all. I did my MS in data science and landed a FAANG role. So, from my perspective, it was worth it. I didn’t see myself considered differently that my classmates with ‘pure’ DS backgrounds. But that’s DS and not CS. Your mileage may vary.
Where’d you do your MS?
