Non-tech compensation figures of friends

I recently came across a thread where someone asked about the best paying non-tech jobs. Another poster replied that hedge funds and PE pay the best long-term. I didn't see too many specific numbers in that thread so thought I should provide some data points. I have a lot of good friends who work at the various top financial firms, and I know most of their TC from last year. So below, I'm going to list their respective firms, position, and 2017 TC. Keep in mind that these are the cream of the crop so not at all representative of the "average" finance person. Rather, these figures indicate the potential upside and how much more lucrative it is than tech for those who manage to make it. All of these guys are between 30-35 years old. Elliott Management, Partner, TC $22 million Viking Global Investors, Portfolio Manager, TC $15 million Two Sigma, Portfolio Manager, TC $8 million KKR private equity, principal, TC $4 million Jane Street, Senior proprietary trader, TC $3.5 million

Those values are outliers. They exist in tech, too — startup founders who sold their company for big money, IPO’d or were acquihired. Comparing your average Blind FAANG offer to this is apples and oranges. I’m willing to bet that P50, P75 and P90 of tech are much better than finance. Finance wins in the highest percentiles only for the most successful individuals. Higher upside potential but lower for the vast majority.

Yeah but a far higher % of employees at the top financial firms are making 7-figures than in top tech firms.

We’re not disagreeing... that’s the higher percentiles where finance surpasses tech at the same percentile value.

This. I know a lot of folks in HF and Finance (my old life) and anything above $2M a year is for the top 0.1 percent

Also banks are now required to release salaries of people making over $1M in Europe. We are talking about 1000 people total in London according to the latest figures.
