I accepted an offer from Google for an electrical engineering role and received my laptop preference form today. Start date in September. Any Googlers have any idea of what sort of laptop I’d be getting spec wise if I were to select the ‘high performance eng windows’ option? new TC: 200k #tech #google
I can look tomorrow morning. Bookmarked this post
Appreciate it :)
Hey! The high perf windows laptop is a Lenovo P1G4 16 inch 2021 with 32gb ram, 1TB hdd, nvidia t1200 4gb dedicated graphics, 11th gen i7 11850H with 8 cores. Like others mentioned, cloudtop (cloud VM) is used for pretty much everything, your local is moreso just there for basic daily needs.
Not sure how it'll be different for HWE, but for SWE, your laptop is basically a web browser. You don't do any local dev, no code on that machine. Everything on physical desktop or cloud desktop that you connect to.
Is this to minimize the amount of time spent configuring a workstation? Or other reasons?
thanks for ur input 🙏
First of all, welcome to Google :) As others said, your computer will just be used to open a browser ( or if you're hardcore, be the target of an x-window). I got a 14in MBP,and it's phenomenal
thank you!! Super excited. Are you on the hardware team? Is everything cloud based for electrical engineers as well?
I'm on the software side, but with tons of hardware experience :) which hw project will you be working on? Feel free to DM if you prefer
Cloudtop all the way
That is the way.
what is cloudtop? LOL
Congratz! Offer pre or post hiring freeze?
thanks 🙏 offer was pre freeze - accepted around early June I think

Ask your manager. Also ask what is the standard practice for your team to get. AFAIK most HW teams use macs.
yup my manager contacted me via my recruiter. I just got the form today and was just wondering what type of specs to expect :) Thanks for the reply
