Would people recommend getting a rental car for Noogler orientation in Mountain View or just using Uber/gBus? How hard is it to find parking on the Google campus?
Gbus was good enough to get to/from campus, but a car made it easier to explore the area after work. I personally rented a car.
Is there any downside to taking the car? I could just leave it at the hotel if I don't need it and use gBus.
No downside other than driving in bay area traffic since you can't expense Uber.
Take the rental car.
Can I expense parking/gas for the car? Is the car more convenient than Uber?
Yep, you should be able to expense gas (I actually forgot to fill up before turning it back in so it got charged directly to google’s credit card). I didn’t have any parking charges at all during my stay, but should be able to expense any parking that is business related. Uber’s would likely only be able to expense for business related trips vs entertainment / eating trips so could add up. Mountain View is pretty spread out so I think a car comes in handy. I ended up driving fellow nooglers around that opted against having a rental car themselves. Really no reason to opt against it other than to save google money. You can get by without it if you want though.
The orientation doc says that all “taxi, transportation, and meal” costs are covered. Since it doesn’t say only for business expenses, it seems pointless to get a rental car. If I want to go see the golden gate bridge and take an uber there, presumably that is okay, right?
That's exactly what I was wondering, but I guess there's no way to know for sure until we submit things for reimbursement.
