I saw this post on my LinkedIn feed and I was so mad as a black person in the tech Industry. Please to my fellow minorities, not everything is about race. The job market is tough this year due to COVID and also competition from good engineers who have been laid off and still searching. The reasons why I was mad 1. This person just finished bootcamp from thinkful last month with no, zilch, nada real engineering experience and he is making wild accusations about tech Industry not hiring black people. 2. Just because you're black and finished bootcamp last month doesn't mean you're entitled to a job. Heck people with good experience have been laid off and still searching for job since March 2020 As black person, people throwing race on every situation doesn't help us either. Grind like everyone else. Put in the effort and don't give up because "there is always light at the end of the tunnel". Anyway, I reached out to him hoping he will respond. I'll inform him about leetcode and how to prepare for interviews. Enough ranting and I hope I didn't appear to be a**hole. Let me know your thoughts on the post below Yoe 4 Old tc 135 New TC 210
The part about lack of black employees is a good point tho, albeit a separate issue. It's something that bothers me every time I apply with a tech company. I interviewed with one well known company and was taken aback that they knew they only had 20 black people (including African and mixed race) globally but they were almost 3000 employees strong.
Wow. yea I agree with the lack of black employees. I've seen it before. Its still a working progess. Maybe the more minorities get into tech, the numbers might go up
I understand it more so from the STEM side but when you don't have black ppl in a company that large in even ops, facilities, IT, etc it's telling.
Same goes for the gender. I don't understand the idea of women only hackathon. Just do a hackathon irrespective of gender if they deserve it will get the prize.
Good point. I'm even shock. Like a month or two of job search and you already jumping into conclusions
Because in the last 10 years as a society we now expect to be given a leg up simply for being XYZ race
Preach! Agreed!
There is a slight point as I’ve heard a ton of subtle racist things while working at tech companies. I don’t doubt that there is bias against black engineers given the language I’ve heard being used.
This job market is really tough right now...I’m not going to completely invalidate that maybe there’s some bias against black engineers but this is not the time to use as an example. I’ve sent out probably 1,000-2,000 apps and only had about 10 interviews and I have a BS/MS in engineering and have 2 yoe as a SWE in defense while working on a BS CS. Lots of people on Blind are acknowledging this job market sucks who are early career and aren’t getting calls back
Agreed!! Not time for this since is tough for everyone. I was unemployed for 6 months before finally getting an offer although I'm not entry level
+1
What’s the point of this post? Ofc people here would agree with you. Confirmation bias much? Lol
That's what I came to say. The majority of the racially motivated comments on here aren't actually black people or they have some sort of racial bias against non-white people. It's interesting and telling about the community on Blind. Regarding the context of the LinkedIn post, many individuals who aren't the "normal" expectation for certain roles feel this way. Women in Tech, Non-White or Asian/Indian in tech. A lot of companies lack diversity, and there are a lot of reasons why that do include actual racism and prejudice. The dumb ass who posted this on Blind, if they are indeed Black would be able to objectively understand that. The research and statistics on the topic is clear as day and can be found from a number of reputable sources. It's even more disheartening and disrespectful that he posted the person's profile, likely in an effort to shame him or to encourage trolls to find him. If anyone did reach out to him, I hope it's to help with a job opportunity and not to stoop to this guys level. (Before anyone asks: My observations on people on Blind are based on seeing the comments and people saying what their race is or questionable language that's borderline offensive).
Thank you for this Post!
I so damn agree. I seriously wonder why everything recently has started being about race. We’ve been asked to change the names of our git branches from “master” to “main” because somehow some idiot connected that to race and slavery!
master to main I agree with though. It’s because the term master is already so connected to slavery. As a black person, this always came across my mind when working with it and made me a little uncomfortable. Glad it was changed!
Git branches I didn't see it as much of an issue tho
