Apple is not a monopoly. Better comparison is probably Google search.
Both are monopolies. Some industries require being one to compete. Some companies are better off as monopolies for national security reasons. It’s complicated. But in matters of general consumer retail where national security is not as risk, monopolies in many cases but not always be broken apart. Apple has been abusing its monopoly for a long time. Degraded messaging with Android for example is absurd, though I have zero love or care for anything related to the racists at Google.
Apple should countersue the US government for being brain dead.
Nvidia stock is up. Let them take it. More money for me
Nvidia supports things like OpenACC which no one else does, and didn't support OpenCL 2. If they supported anything other than CUDA well on their GPUs, there would be less of a CUDA monopoly in AI. Similarly if Apple allowed fair access to APIs on iOS, there wouldn't be charges of an App Store monopoly. Platforms should not lock in users using software. No, this doesn't mean everything is a monopoly, it just means some behaviors rise to the level of being anti-competitive, and that is what the DOJ is trying to stop.
Allowing access to API’s is different from investing in the engineering required to develop and maintain driver support
Sure, but the effect of lock in can be the same. Google does this on Android too denying third party RCS apps. Third parties are implementing drivers for Nvidia products, which Nvidia has finally relented to (more than just having PTX available).
Problem is not with monopoly, it's how they got there. They go deep down to a level of creating a culture where not using an iPhone is shameful. All my L8s have - Sent from iPhone in the email footnote.
I don’t agree! There may be some pride aspect but not shame. Several of my senior managers are on Android! Definitely iPhone quality is better than others which is driving their sales!
To be fair.. NVDA should not be penalized for having come up with such powerful product that just cannot be easily replaced by another company's product. If NVDA is taking advantage of the customers, then eventually customers will speak out through the spe ding habits. At a corporate level, they'll try to come up with something that is just good enough to replace NVDA at a fraction of the cost. If NVDA were to push in the direction such as 'you have to use every little bit of our products' not just the GPU then that would be abusive and should be penalized.
This is missing that products themselves can break anti-trust laws, which governments and regulators have the right and obligation to enforce.
There is competition AMD and Intel, but it’s not Nvidia’s problem that the competition cannot stand against them
Intel GPUs are actually quite good for low end computers, AMD is really a disappointment given their price range. If I had 10K I would bet Intel comes out second on GPUs and AI chips in the future.
