NyNj EZ pass requires an account to have a prepaid balance at all times.
Sometimes it as high as $70-$200. How is this legal? Aren’t they extorting money from people for goods that have not been exchanged yet? They are essentially getting an interest free loan from their customers!!

It’s actually based on how often you use it. And is it actually a required balance? For example when I top up my balance they usually ask for $20. But if I use it twice and have a balance of $4 at the end of the day, they won’t prompt me to refill. It only becomes an issue if your balance gets below 0 and you continue to use it without topping up.
You can change it to only pay manually when you need
It applies to manual reloads too, which they discourage use because it requires you to enter CC Info EVERY-TIME. Its in T&C. You also get an email scolding you if you fall below prepaid threshold in manual account.
