My theory about Amazon

Never worked there, but have many co-workers, etc from Amazon. My theory is the hiring bar does not match the pip bar. They are willing to hire people who don’t really nail the interview and give them a chance. If you are sure of yourself and want to give it a go, they won’t baby you. Google, meta, etc are at lease somewhat more concerned about bad hires and are more conservative. If they are not pretty sure about you they won’t go forward and give you a shot. They don’t want to have to deal with firing you. Plus, like anywhere, a fair amount of political BS, the odd bad manager, etc. True?

So Amazon's relatively easier to get in and worst is you end up with a PIP severance. Interesting perspective. Noted.

Well, if you don’t interview well, but perform great it would be win.

I do seem to interview well though. Maybe I'll have amazon as a lower priority attempt if others don't work out. Double noted.

True

MongoDB mKlg2 Mar 1

Yeah they don’t care too much about preventing false positives. I don’t think they have that luxury being such a big company. Pip system helps them cull these “bad hires”. There’s a reason it’s called a pip factory.

Your theory is wrong. Amazon has very rigorous interviews for candidates and those that don't raise the bar are denied. The only time Amazon has a relatively low bar is for new grads straight out of school with no experience. This is where our PIP fodder comes from. There are no other exceptions. This isn't my opinion, this is a fact. It is corporate policy enforced with multiple mechanisms such as strict interview formats and bar raisers with ability to veto desperate managers looking to hire anyone.

They hire anyone that can memorize stories for their LPs. Bar is on the floor.

It’s true unless you’re interviewing for L6+ which I believe is staff equivalent at most companies.

No. Hiring process is not perfect but is reasonably good. PIP factory comes from incompetent management. Management at all levels of the company doesn’t understand the work, so they can’t reasonably allocate it. Then they get bad results and need to blame someone.

Funnily enough I’ve been interviewing and Snowflake was the easiest onsite

MongoDB mKlg2 Mar 1

Is it true that they just copy and paste medium directly from LC in some of the rounds? Those types of interviews are the easiest imo.

Amazon laduderina Mar 1

Nah that’s Meta, Snowflake I felt is a mix when it comes to coding interviews. Some copy paste, some well thought out questions. Maybe there’s no standardized training for interviewers there yet

Amazon vIUt15 Mar 1

This is generally true but the hiring bar is pretty high at especially L6+
