Hit new milestone: 1.4M at 29F
Hey - I am considering a 11 mo. contractor role in big tech but have always been an fte so this is new to me. Was impacted by layoffs. Would you mind sharing your experience? After getting hired what are the cons of being hired as a contractor that I may not realize until after I accept? What’s a fair hourly rate? I’m going through a recruiting agency…Also would love to hear any other thoughts and advice you may have....thanks so much! General rule of thumb: take your hourly, double it and that’s the number of thousands you’d like to make if you were an fte. IMO you’re undervaluing yourself relative to TC today. Also, recruitment agencies take a very, very tasty chunk.
Thank you! Super helpful. Is there a way to negotiate with the agency? Do you have any knowledge if their payment comes as a one time payment from the company? Or could I really be getting $120 per hour and they are keeping $30, giving me $90? How does that typically work if you know…
Definitely slurping from a flat rate the client pays. Recruitment agencies should be a last resort “I really need work, now” option for contractors. They always make out like a bandit. Larger agencies have zero wiggle or give on what their cut is because they have shareholders and boards to appease. Smaller agencies and one person shows usually give you more wiggle.
I’m interested in long term contract work ( at FAANG ideally ) - how does one get connected to/find out about those roles?
A recruiting agency contacted me on LinkedIn
Why did you come up with so many hash tags? Did you come up with this list yourself?
Relatively free of pip and politics, and you won't have much stress. Good option in today's market…especially If you can utilize your partner's health insurance. Even full-time doesn't mean stability, we could get chopped anytime. I've seen some teams prefer to let go full-time employees to save big. Actually my manager once implied that between let go 1 full-time vs let go 1.5 contractors vs cutting down contractor's hours, he prefers the 1st...
Saves more money? Easier to predict? What's the reasoning there?
I moved from FTE to contractor because I wanted to be remote anywhere. There is no perf but pay is lower. Contractor benefits also vary per client. With Meta it was great: office, team events, etc. With Google you cannot enter the office and are strictly US-based.
Whoa. You can't go into the office!? I'm at airbnb as a contractor and was an FTE at Meta managing contractors. Airbnb treats their contractors much better than meta (pays all company holidays, pto, travel to team offsites, etc.)
Is this on w2 or 1099? What does contracting in operations mean?
Sales analytics and ops - stepping in for a fte employee who is taking a long term leave. Good question, I honestly didn’t even think to ask. Asking recruiter agency… what’s the pros/cons of each?
Not sure of your status but if you are a citizen or a GC do 1099 and you can save some money on taxes if you have your own corp. the dollar rate seems decent for a sales and ops role. How many yoe? Is this for a FAANG?
