Volvo EX90 EV vs gas powered 3 row SUV

Trying to choose between the two: EX90 pros: -3 row SUV without terrible MPG and associated costs -No gas, oil changes, etc -$80k minus whatever tax credits are available. Much cheaper than comparable Tesla, similar cost to new gas powered SUV. -300 mile range EX90 cons: -Can get a decent CPO SUV like XC90 for 45-50k -Bad for trips to national parks or other remote places with no chargers. -Not delivered until at least early 2024. Need to get by with Nissan Rouge with 2 kids till then. -EV will depreciate more due to better technology being available in 3-5 years? I’ve already preordered the EX90, but not sure if I’ll actually go with it. Preorder is fully refundable. TC 320k.

Get a used XC90 as a stopgap for 2-3 years?

Great choice. Wouldn’t be so sure a out depreciation- i reckon there’ll be a good second-hand market for EVs; i’d say def go for it; but also consider: do you live olin a house and can charge there? Do you have a charger at work? What’s the charging network in you area? How long are you long trips? Is there another car in the family?

Yes to charging at home. Yes to charging at work. Yes we have a second car (hybrid sedan) Longest trips can be 10+ hours. No idea about non-Tesla network except that I can charge at work. Not really a big consideration except for road trips though.

$30-40k is a lot of money for gas lol. Just buy the used gas one from carmax and get the extended warranty. Volvos aren’t very reliable and the depreciation hit on the EV is gonna hurtttttt

I’d estimate $10k savings on gas and maintenance vs a conventional vehicle over 100k miles. Factor in the $7500 tax credit on top of that and it’s not so terrible since we’re comparing new to used. Extended warranty isn’t free either.

$30k price diff - $10k gas+maint - $7500 tax credit = savings of $12k. New EV $80k, worth after 3 yrs = $45k, loss of $35k not to mention the hassle of using non Tesla charging infrastructure. I’d still go with the gas and get an EV next go around.

I love EV but I won't do it for 1 car family. It sucks for long distance drive. Tesla is only company where you can rely on its charge network and plan your road trip. All the others rely on 3rd party charger and they all sucks.

I’ll look into the 3rd party charger problem more. If it’s still bad next year I’ll ask for my deposit back.
