Most likely both. Though the risk of Malware from China is higher than the reward of not having a backdoor. Either way - I’ve never bought one or plan on buying one at any time.

Most chinese Android phones don't have gms, or google services. Anyways, they can fork from aosp, or even from the prior google source drop. China isn't going to care if they are violating copyrights.
