I'm moving to San Jose soon. I've built tree flooring expenses but I think I'm missing a dose of reality. Please slap me with a dose of reality. Base:113k After taxes and other deductions(401k, med, Hsa, all taxes): 67.5k (source:ADP take home calc) Monthly: 5,633. Rent: 2200 1br Loans:800 Child expense in a diff state:1000 Bills: grocery, utilities, car ins. Misc etc:1000 Car: 333 Savings:300 Savings could be increased by reducing rent significantly (1800 studio) Feasible or Delusional?? #livingexpenses #budget #San_Jose
Shop around now is a good time to find a deal even in SF

Delusional
Which part?
Just read your response about kid not living with you , i take my words back if it's a 1 man budget
Find a new job that pays higher base and TC. That salary won't last you long in the bay area.
That's the medium to long term goal. Thanks.
Do you get any bonuses or stock? You can make it work (assuming your monthly expenses are an overestimate). Take whatever you save and put it in your 401K. Shop around and try to get a better deal on rent, consider roommates but make sure you find a place you like. With WFH, you’re gonna be particularly miserable if you are somewhere you don’t like. Get somewhere comfortable, even if it’s outside the Bay.
I really appreciate your input. I get bonuses and stocks, and are not factored into the calculation. I'll make it work whiles I work hard to increase my TC. Great advice.
Why not factor them in? You should budget based on TC
Goodness gracious! You need to find something that pays more.
I wouldn't move to san jose with that low of TC personally, budget is being stretched pretty thin. Maybe rent a room in a 2-3bdr if you can find such arrangement.
That TC doesn’t make a San Jose move worth it. Is your job being transferred to San Jose ? Maybe you could make it, but you would be treading water Maybe Fremont or Milpitas might be more “affordable”, but still. And not to disappoint and put things in perspective I think 90k is considered poverty with a family
It could be doable but you may not be able to save 401k or personal savings. I would take it knowing that I would have to make my best to get better job in 12 months or so. Biggest expenses are housing. You could rent a room for 800 or 1k. Or now that rent is cheaper you may be able to rent an ok place for 2k. Between gas and food maybe 1k or 1.5k so it is doable

Why does leetcode get so much hate?
The rent is too damn high.
This is a lie, San Jose cheaper than other cities nearby
I’m saying for OP, it’s too high.
