Job market is brutal for SWEs 🥲
My current firm Hashicorp got bought by IBM. Generally acquisitions result in layoffs. I am on H1 visa. Wondering if anyone can answer my questions: How soon I should expect layoffs to happen? What can I do to prevent me getting laid off. Anyone knows when IBM did layoff last how they handled H1 employees and what was the severance? #tech
Expect layoffs within 3-6 months from acquisition date 📅
What is acquisition date?. Is it the date when announcement of acquisition came officially?
Layoffs usually hit non-tech roles the hardest in an acquisition.
Be interview ready.
If you are getting acquired for a product that they plan to use , and you are working on that product you should be fine.
Uh oh. RIP Hashicorp.
You should plan to be interview ready in 2 months, and change jobs in 4 months. IBM may take longer for layoffs but on H1, i wouldn’t risk it.
If you’re in function that can be centralized like finance you’re in trouble, if you’re supporting the product or business growth you’ll be retained for at least 2-3 years as they figure out the growth play. After that who knows
IBM probably moves slower than other companies.
They move at the same speed as their peers did in 1899
This made me laugh and cry.
