Obsessed with FB data scientist role!

I really want to hear from FB data scientists! For some reason, I think working at FB as a data scientist would be really great for me. I’m not happy with my current TC and don’t see a bright future for the disk drive industry. Also, there is literally no room to grow in my current organization. Current salary/bonus/rsu ~ 142/25/25 Education Physics PhD, Math MS. YOE ~ 15 yrs I mostly do data analysis of test data to understand magnetic recording physics to help product development. I use SQL/Python for data manipulation, summaries, presentations, and JMP for data exploration and analysis, switching to Python more and more. I feel very underpaid with no prospects for growth. Yep that’s life in hardware industry, and a dying one like disk drives. I stay with my current company because my commute is 10-15 min each way, like my coworkers, and the work is interesting, except the low pay an no opportunity for growth. I visited FB campus once and really fell in love with it. I like social media and think of FB as a great company. Am I wrong? I also think even as level 4 I would get a significant boost in pay. But preferably level 5 would be ideal. Is my impression that level 4 TC ~ 275 and level 5 TC ~ 320 a pipe dream? FB data scientists, please share information and help me out. First what’s TC for level 4 and level 5 in the analytics team (not core machine learning or infrastructure). How should I prepare for the interview? Is working at FB as a data scientist really all that great? Please share information with relevant details. Thank you! BTW, I’m a citizen and don’t need visa sponsorship. Comments from data scientists at Google and other companies are welcome too.

Money.

U sound very well versed in fundamentals

Have u thought of computer vision

The thought has crossed my mind. In my previous role almost 8 years ago, I used LabVIEW vision to automate sorting and detecting defective parts based on SEM images. It’s an interesting field.

Thank you, sir! Your suggestion is duly noted. Particularly the part about “break into the tech industry.” My fear is getting a callow still wet behind the ears to interview me.

Sure I agree with your second point. But technical skills are what really matter, which I believe I have.

You sound over excited about working for FB. It isn't that glamorous --if you really want something exciting may be you should go for FBI, and not FB?

Seagate toti420 OP Jan 30, 2019

That’s my fear. I feel like I’ve created this image in my head and I may be wrong. That’s why I want to hear from FB data scientists. I’d be great to meet one in person and have a chat.

Nah it’s great

Thanks. I think that’s for software engineers. I want the numbers for data scientists.

Did you end up joining Facebook?

Seagate toti420 OP Jan 8, 2020

No. Didn’t pass the phone screen with a tricky SQL question.

Datacamp is good you can try that and I second Kaggle

Data engineers have slightly less tc than SWE. I am not sure about data scientists. I heard they are same as swe.

You will not get an L5 for an entry level data scientist. Your yoe as data scientist will be 0 when you get hired, why the hell L5?

Microsoft Desitechie Jan 30, 2019

I guess he would claim he was working on data analysis in his previous job, if that can be claimed!

He is literally doing exactly what data scientist are doing at FCBK which is using data insights (analysis) for product development

SAP DaedalusSF Jan 30, 2019

Oh yeah that’s a reputable company right there!
