Also for anyone that's worked at oculus, what's the backend team there like? Its not some 3d modeling type of work, is it?

Do you really get to decide? When I did internships I was assigned a team. Not much from the intro survey really makes a huge difference in what specific product you’ll be working on. Doesn’t really matter where you end up anyway, make the most out of it. Hopefully you will be in person.
Really depends on the project area. Instagram backend is Python mostly which is more useful than the others. Oculus probably the most interesting.
