I’m trying to figure out what I should do. I realize the bay is so much more expensive than Texas. The role, company, and potential future seem to favor Apple but the immediate pay favors oil. Apple is remote for the foreseeable future and I’d likely be residing in a MCOL area until they return. My background is in oil but my interest is closer to tech. What do? Company: Apple Base: $130k Sign on: $35k RSU: $105k over 4 years TC: $191k year 1 Bonus: Based on performance after year 1 Location: Remote until RTO in Cupertino Relo: Full relo Role: Supply chain Company: Small o&g company Base: $150k Sign on: $25k RSU: $0k Bonus: up to 20% based on performance (usually around 15%) TC: $175k year 1 + free company car Location: Houston Relo: Yes Role: Technical chemical sales TC: $145k in a HCOL area in the east coast prior to quitting Exxon ($0 now) YOE: 7
Can you possibly work in Austin instead of Cupertino?
As of now, they’re firm on remote or Cupertino. Austin is a more convenient spot for me based on a personal situation but it sounds like it doesn’t fly.
Do you actually want to do sales? Could be extremely lucrative if you want to go down that path. But ultimately they do seem like very different roles
No I don’t want to, at least for that company. The type of work heavily favors Apple but I know I’d be successful at either based on my background. I have interest in learning sales since I’ve never done that before
Apple will also give you annual RSU refreshers which can have a significant impact on your total come after year 1. Depending on your level these can be in the 6 figure range on top of your base and bonus. Double check with your recruiter.
What does the bonus look like? The offer stated it could be anything, at any time, at discretion of the company. Any insight?
There is an annual perf review where your bonus is determined. So every year they evaluate and give you some cash and RSU grant. The ranges are differ for IC can ICT roles based on level.
O&G has some good years left but is on the decline, tech will give so many more options - especially with Apple on your resume. Even with COL and lower TC the Apple gig will put you in a far better place 5 years from now.
