Already at Amazon, but the group got re-org so applied internally and externally. At almost the same time I heard back with offers from both an internal team and Stripe. Work wise, Amazon might be more interesting as it's in ML infra and not an area I have worked with before. I actually already told the team I will join (since I haven't heard back from Stripe yet) so there might be some ill will if I leave. Career wise, Stripe is kind of an upgrade as I am only L5 at Amazon. Benefits similar. WLB I heard is also similar? 15 yoe with 3 in Amazon
What location(s)?
Canada
Are you in Amazon Canada? Is that why TC is so low? I think fresh grads in US get 200K TC in FAANG.
What team at Stripe?
Observability infrastructure team
Hm haven’t heard anything specific about that one
Idk I'd stay away
Could you give some examples of reasons? Also considering joining Stripe Please DM if you prefer non public post
Lol the votes. 40/4
Haha but it's concerning every Stripe person who commented were against going there...
And keep in mind. Amazon isn't very popular here 😂
15 yoe and L5, 207k。 what makes you even think about staying?
It's partly my fault, lol. I have never heard of leetcode and didn't even prepare before my Amazon interview, so got downleveled. I switched out of my first team because it wasn't great, and then internal transfered once (so this would be the second) due to re-org so my promotion timeline is reset again. My current team isn't bad and the new team sounds nice, and ML experience is good, but the TC boost and uplevel are also nice.
It’s Canada
Stripes complaining because - They changed comp structure. New hires are paid approx 30% less and they started giving fixed $ value of RSU only for a year (no more stacking or potential upside to holding) - Ever changing priorities and re orgs - Over hired and made a mess of it with layoffs - Shipping out jobs to Europe and India to save cost - Lowering valuation and no IPO in sight For those working for Amazon, none of these matter as we have seen worse 🤣🤣 Source: have friends who work there.
Thank you! It's great to see the specific reasons - but yes, you are correct that some of these won't apply to me (since my base would be already higher than my Amazon TC, I am still ahead even if RSUs are worth zero, and the 15% YoY growth at Amazon also limits potential upside). I got re-orged twice at Amazon already and we are also having messy layoffs so I guess it's not worse?
Regarding Stripe RSU, my understanding is that the fixed $ value can increase depending on performance. As an example, bonus for someone might be 20% of base, however it can go up/down depending on performance. Yes, stacking benefit is gone, however 4 year cliff is gone too. The above does not matter to Amazon employees since Amazon also does not exactly have stacking RSUs.
Don't trust blind with these polls. It's a bunch of LEs as a loud vocal minority shitting on amazon.
Thank you - I take these with a grain of salt. For me, it sounds like the work environment is similar, but one offers more money and higher level while the other has potentially more interesting projects - pros and cons to each side and I am very lucky to have two good options to choose from.
Consider this. Stripe is on the decline. They are losing valuation. Everyone I know who works there is looking to leave. Amazon had future stability. I don't know if the stock will double but I doubt they lose much market share over the next decade. Mobility. Amazon is king here. So many different business units which unique culture and work life balance.
That’s 400k Canadian That’s serious money Congratulations
Sorry, the figures are in Canadian (oops)
Was Stripe acquired by Cisco? I thought it was Splunk?
Why would Cisco buy Stripe? Their entire revenue is less than Stripe’s current valuation
Stripe is a mess right now from what I’ve heard, but it’s hard to argue with that TC upgrade.
What kind of mess?
Not messy enough to turn down a 40% TC bumping offer
