IRS Warns Thousands of Taxpayers They Could Face Jail Time
Hi folks, I have offers from these 3 companies and need a bit of help choosing which to go with. I’m looking for good comp, decent WLB, and opportunities for growth. I’m currently leaning towards Google, but GitHub is a close second due to the team and culture and the fact that’s it remote. All of these offers are for a medium CoL US city. YoE: 3 Current TC: 132k - 95k, 25k, ~12% (base/stock/bonus) Google (L3, downleveled from L4) Org: GCP TC: ~190k - 111k, 175k/4 (front loaded), 15% bonus Recruiter said this was the max they can give. Should I try to negotiate for signon here? GitHub (E2) TC: ~170k - 120k, 55k/4, 0-10% bonus, 25k signon Microsoft (L61) Org: Azure TC: ~160k - 114k, 75k/4, 0-10% bonus, 25k/2 signon Thanks!
What made you think you were downleveled ? Probably your interview performance didn't meet L4 bar? I know Google has a downlevel reputation and to some extent it can be true but assuming you are downleveled won't give you enough positive vibes to join Google. And money wise you got the best offer from G but you still complaining abt downlevel. It's always good to join a company with a positive mindset, else better not join it.
Yeah agreed, idk why everyone thinks they get downleveled when they probably interviewed as good as the level they got. Plenty of people with 3 YOE also do well and get L4 too, it just depends on interview performance and prior experience
There is no need to get so annoyed. I never said that I’m not happy with the offer. I simply mentioned that because I interviewed for L4 and have 3 yoe + a MS.
DMed you. I am joining bay area location with L3 soon.
OP give location info. Numbers don't mean shit when you compare Seattle vs Virginia vs Austin
Equivalent to Austin CoL. I’m already giving detailed info, don’t want to give myself away.
Pay seems below median for Austin L3. Median is ~190k with equal vesting. You have 190k with frontloaded vesting, completely different calculation. Definitely ask for sign-on, they usually give it if you ask.
Microsoft is known for the best WLB, but low refreshers. You can definitely use the Google offer to negotiate for higher stocks from microsoft - L61 can give more stocks than your current offer. The base also looks low compared to Redmond bases (check levels fyi), but hopefully the low CoL makes up for it. I also think for L61 the max bonus is 20%, but the average is 10%. (So 10% target 20% max) Among microsoft orgs, Azure is moderate in terms of WLB and a good balance between WLB and career growth. You can probably find other orgs with better WLB but worse career growth, but azure sort of has the almost-best of both worlds. If you ever eventually transfer to office (e.g. word, powerpoint, excel), that’ll be a good org to coast and retire — you will be expected to do very little, the culture is great, but it’ll be very saturated with very strong and experienced people, with low opportunities for growth.
Thanks for the info. I think my biggest concern with Azure is WLB. Firstly, it’s an infra team. Secondly, I didn’t ask the interviewers directly, but it seems like they were under quite a bit of pressure. Also, I would be joining a second new, large team under the HM, so not sure how engaged they would be with my career and growth.
One benefit about joining a new team is there’s often a lot of room to grow - you can easily take ownership of areas etc. But yeah, I don’t know how much on-call or other work infra would require. Someone currently at MSFT can probably speak better to that. Good luck with your decision.
How the fuck did you get downleveled
Yeah, I’d say there’s a lot in Azure right now. I think the WLB isn’t as good as it was before, but that means room for promotion and work on interesting projects. However they’re lowballing you with a salary of 114k for level 61. I’m sure by the time I post this you have already made a decision! Curious - who’d you pick?
I dropped the Azure offer soon after this and kept it between G and GH. My company then gave me a counter offer + promo that beat both. Neither was willing to budge based on the counter, though. I ended up choosing G. The factors that pushed me were: (1) new WFH announcement, (2) new team in a new office, (3) the Google name. Worst case scenario: I just switch to another team or company within a year or so.
gcp seattle?
Not Seattle. Don’t want to give away too much.
