Offer expiration??

Got an offer last Friday. I have 1 week to decide it said. I replied with the counter offer to my recruiter who hasn't got back to me yet. So in this case, does the offer expire tomorrow? Or how it works. I'm little new to this. I see people negotiating for 15-20 days with companies. How do you do it?

Exploding offers are BS. Think about what u will say to a car salesman who says “this offer is only available while u r on the lot. Once u walk away, I can’t get u this offer”. Would u not walk away from such slimy scheme?

+1 but also tis the nature of offers outside the Bay/tech bubble

I used to work at a place that gave 24 hours on offers. If you really needed it you might get 48. It was a good place to work and the thinking is that you were either ready and it was a fair offer, or you weren’t. No need to get stuck in a bidding war if you don’t have to. They did let candidates know up front that if an offer came it would have that condition.

For my current gig, I was given a very short window. I asked for a week extension and got it without a big hassle. BUT I did it when the company first made the offer. Harder if it is about to explode. Had an offer from a big bank in the past, they were trying to play hardball so I would stop talking to another big bank and made me an offer that exploded in two days at 5pm. I sent an email saying that I was declining as my job search was not done (first bank knew about other bank) and if they felt that they had to withdraw their offer, so be it (emailed at 10 am on explosion day) They backpedaled SO fast. I eventually took their offer after negotiating an additional 120k in guaranteed bonus and a big sign on. You can only do this if you are prepared for them to pull the offer, though.

I can only give you my experience, which may be different than yours. I joined GM IT during the large in sourcing effort. They gave me a date. I pushed back because I wanted to stay for my bonus at my previous company. They agreed. I found out it is up to the hiring manager decision. In my case HR was just the middleman. Also my salary was not negotiable (I received a very good offer, but it never hurt to ask). Not sure if that's how it is now...

Its always like that for safety on their side. But rarely actually used. If you ask for extension or more time they will certainly give it to you. Don't worry about it. Ask and get what your looking for instead of complaining on here

Usually quite a lot goes into getting a req, interviewing and offering. It's possible it's totally on the level but more likely it's a tool to try and keep people from negotiating. Why are you going to work for GM? There are better companies.
