I am graduating from college this May, and I recently got an average offer from General Motors I'm Atlanta, GA for an entry-level position. I have a small window of time to accept/decline the offer. This is the first formal job offer I have received after many many applications. I am currently based in California. Should I accept this offer or try to wait for something better in California tech? #offer #career #tech
If you don't have any other options yes. If you do I'd avoid GM. Tech wise it's really not the best place to be.
What's the offer? Compensation and level? What field?
65k, level 5A, Software Development
Do you think it's a good offer, or should I wait and try to get hired on tech in California?
I heard there’s a hiring freeze in GM, are they still hiring ?
They do have a hiring freeze. But if they issued an offer before the freeze then I assume the offer would be honored
Take it. They have good benefits and a 401k plan that beats the pants off of any tech company.
Most people don't know this but 401k was devised by companies to avoid giving pension to employees. 401k are market based investment. So your money depends on the market.
Not necessarily. You can elect to have your 401k in money market or stable value fund which has nothing to do with stock market. This is what I have been doing since 2019 and so far so good
But isn't company contribution to 401k less that what they would have paid otherwise as pension ?
Is GM still offering Pension plan? Though it is not an immediate money, usually it is between 10-20k during early years after vesting.
No
Personally, I would accept at this time. Unless you’re in software, a lot of companies are scaling down operations and a lot of companies have even started rescinding offers. Having said that, there’s nothing stopping you from continuing to interview after you accept this offer. If a better opportunity comes your way, then you can always renege on this one.
Thank you for your help!
