Joined Microsoft fresh out of college in 2022. Been here for 1 year. Got my first vesting and now going to resign. I joined as an SDE and my manager kept giving me impossible work making it tough for me to even breathe. I tried hard giving 14 hrs a day. I was still unsatisfied with my work and impact and so was my manager. But i am finally resigning with no jobs lined up. I l be taking 2 mos break and explore other career options apart from SDE. Idk how future HRs will see this gap but fuck it. Life is too short to keep thinking about it. We should do what we love doing, so that even if the work becomes hectic we would still have the courage to show up for it every day. Just felt like writing this out. EDIT- Thank you to all the people who are giving sensible advice against quitting. But right now m 23 and have enough savings to last for another year ( i also did 2 internships at Goldman Sachs And saved that money) Is it necessary to just choose one career and stay stuck in it forever even if you dread going to work daily? Especially now when I don't have a family to look after? I mean can i not go for further studies or explore other options? I am not sure if am right. I am just seeking advice. Edit 2- I have decided to stay a few more weeks and see how things turn out
quiet quit and start preparing…give some bs excuse to make it look like you still wanna work at the usual pace but cant for sole time
I ll try this. Thank you
On one hand, I applaud your courage. As you said YOLO! On the other hand, leaving the job without anything lined up, could be detrimental. Not just resume wise but it's like in a year things got tough and you gave up. I am assuming you are in early 20s since you graduated in 2022. I am in my 30s so no way I have seen "enough" life lol but have had my fair share of difficult personal/professional situation and running away/giving up is something very easy to adopt as a habit. If I were you, I will would introspect if this is pattern and if it is, I would stop it. Just my 2 cents. At the end of the day, you do you. All the best!
Thank you for your advice. I ll try giving some more time to it
Hope you navigate through this and come out stronger on the other side. Cheers 🍻
Don't quit , instead try to break down the challenges into smaller manageable parts in your 1:1 with manager Ask for a mentor ,ask for help it's fine to start slow. You have a long career of 30 years ,don't take emotional decisions specially in current market. Vent out with close friends or here , just do small things at a time and make visible progress to boost own confidence.
Sure thanks. I ll try this for 2 weeks
I know you think quitting is a big FU but actually staying and working slower is the biggest FU to your manager. Plus you’ll get paid for it. Just relax lil bro and play video games during the day
"staying and working slower is the biggest FU to your manager." Are you sure? The manager gets higher reward budget to reward those who get things done and OP will get zero rewards. Not sure it's so bad from a manager's perspective, while from OP's perspective it's a huge drop in TC. Also I am quite sure OP is the problem. When someone brag about working 14 hours it's just... a huge red flag. I never seen anyone working more than standard hours who actually get stuff done. We are paid for getting things done, not to waste a lot of time.
I worked at Microsoft before and I left because it didn’t matter if you worked 1 hour a week or 50 hours a week. You still get 100% to 120% of your target every time. It’s a joke. Evidence: My friend literally worked 1 hour and traveled the world in 2022 and got 10% rewards. I know someone else on my sister team at Microsoft that never went to standup or replied to emails… it took them 3 years to fire this person. Let’s say u don’t do shit and get 0% bonus… versus quitting and losing 100% of your TC. I don’t get your point.
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥💪💪 Go for it brother. I did the same, leaving Amazon and taking 2-3 months break. Not everyone has courage to take such decisions and 80% will have a negative opinion about this, bcoz they are not risk takers Also one more thing I will suggest, instead of dicrwtly resigning start doing bare minimum for 1-2 months. Take all the leaves casual annual. Manager will say that ur performance is going down etc etc ... don't give a fuck. And then resign. It will give u 1-2 months of extra time. I did the same 😄. Take all your leaves and then resign insted of encashing it.
Tc or gtfo
It’s not that you hate software eng, it’s maybe that you don’t like your current team and what they work on
Wait till you ever work a real job
1 year is a bit short, especially fresh out of college. Sends a lot of wrong signals. Working in a team you like and a topic you are interested in makes all the difference. Too early to give up the career path IMO.
So i should try in another companies for SDE? Cuz internal transfer is really tough rn at msft
I’d say figure out how to stay at least another year for the optics, then move company/team. Market is not super friendly to fresh grads right now, you might checkmate yourself by leaving
Don’t quit now. Market is bad for any job. Stay in Microsoft until market gets better. Don’t worry about your manager. Develop think skin which is important for any job. You can also look to move into a different team. I quit last year thinking I can find a job or do anything else but haven’t been able to get back. Market is not so favorable for SDEs.
You couldn’t get a job in 1 year ? Is the market this bad or are you lacking some preparation?
I’m not actively looking. I apply for jobs that I like since I left my prev job for a reason. I don’t want to burnout again in the future. Don’t know how it is if I apply to every job posted on LinkedIn.
