On Visa, want to bring mother, for ling term

Here on H1b, green cards for Indians are no where in the horizon, which, in this case is a boon. Want to bring my mim who is getting old, and has medical issues here to live with me. I have heard, there is a special visa for medical purposes, where the person doesn't need to go back like they do in a visitor visa. Anyone tried that option? I am hunting for details. Not getting a GC might be a boon, as if one is in GC then apparently they cannot use this clause to get an ailing relative.

No it doesn’t work that way

I think a lot of us are/will be in this boat soon. Canada/Aus allow parents for longer if you become a resident. US is brutally inconsiderate when it comes to this. Consider a switch once you have enough money saved. My best wishes to you and your family.

Oath Atinlay Mar 18, 2019

What would be “considerate”? Letting anyone you know come with you?

Akamai Technologies Bboi Mar 18, 2019

No Im simply saying that parents are family, much like a wife or child(dependent). Their healthcare would be covered by OP and the parent would be a law abiding visa holder. Dont see why not.

Agreed. The ability to stay in this country is a privilege not a right.

Oracle alwzangry Mar 18, 2019

OP, no, that's not an option. You either go to live near your mom or wait until you're a citizen to bring her here. H1/L1 is a temporary work permit. If career isn't the only priority for you, it's not worth waiting for US immigration laws to change in your "useful" lifetime.

Symantec 0xcd20 OP Mar 18, 2019

Oh for sure, i don't give a f about a gc or m y job. I am always replaceable where I work, but I am not, when it comes to family. If you have read my other thread about bulk money transfer you would know, i am geared up to show these guys the finger. By the way, for all the immigrant haters, there is such a visa.

It's hard to prove that no treatment is available in India..even if they do give, they can limit the visa duration to the "medical treatment duration" this is not a long term visa..

Oracle alwzangry Mar 18, 2019

This isn't a long term visa. She wouldn't be able to stay beyond any active treatment not available in your home country. You aren't the first person going through this dilemma. There are no loopholes that others wouldn't have figured out yet. You'll waste your time and get frustrated.

It seems like the better option is for you to work in India for a few years to support your mother. H1b is a temporary visa and the phrase "long term" is incompatible with h1b even for you, never mind your extended family.

Hey OP, the best option is the investor green card if you have 500k to invest. I know people who have done it for their elderly parents even though they already had GC themselves. GC to citizenship and then to sponsor parents is yet another long road. This is the shortest path and the only thing you lose is the opportunity cost for the 500k.

Amazon tjpb67 Mar 18, 2019

That takes 5 to 10 years. His mother is having medical issues today. I don't see how that helps him. Also it's not clear his mother will pass the medical exam necessary to get a greencard.

Adobe tihwv Mar 18, 2019

unde3rpaid, Would you also happen to know how long it took on that route?

Symantec 0xcd20 OP Mar 18, 2019

Thanks all. Nah, i would rather go back and invest the 500k in another way, not buy a gc. It will deplete all savings and leave nothing for medical treatment. Which is the goal here.

Amazon tjpb67 Mar 18, 2019

That treatment is going to be a LOT cheaper in India so I'm not even sure why you would want to bring her to the US in the first place. It's going to make way more financial sense for you to work a few years there than bring her here and pay. If she's ends up in the hospital for an extended stay you could easily spend 500k on hospital bills, which in India might cost 1/5th that or less.

Microsoft pokey Mar 19, 2019

I agree. Also, the doctors in India take an overall holistic approach to treatments than the doctors in US. Even though the hospitals don’t look and feel fancy, you can be relatively more assured that your mom will be in good hands. Elderly care is also easily available and affordable in India. You can have a person come stay at your place or visit during day or night, depending on which one is though, to take care of your mom. Even in the most difficult phase of her life, you can assure she lives with dignity. Good luck achieving that in US.

Microsoft pokey Mar 18, 2019

That’s what I am planning to do. Build up experience, save up 500k and take it all with me to India. It has a lot more value in India than in US. 3 more years to go!!

LPRs cannot apply for GCs for their parents.
