As a stale, pale male, it’s been made abundantly clear to me through official, semi-official, and unofficial channels, that my contributions are not as valuable, my humanity is at a discount, and in particular, my career prospects are limited, at Google. So I’m now shopping around, looking at other companies. I am asking, specifically, only for anecdotes and impressions for those who have worked both at Google and other tier 1 West Coast tech companies for their impressions on the penetration level of D&I ideology. Whether you think official D&I programs, such diversity candidate interview fast tracking, diversity commissars on promotion committees, company wide social justice newsletter with full-time paid staffers, etc, are good ideas or not, I still value your opinion. I think companies have an absolute right to hire and reward on whatever grounds they want to, including skin color and gender, (although the law might disagree...), and I don’t want to get into a debate about that. My goal is to peacefully draw away from companies that have chosen that path and to go to work for a company that still practices identity-group-blind technocratic meritocracy, and for that I need your lovely data. If you could give a score normed to Google standards, with 0 being the factitious Brogrammer Dudebro culture that the tech media likes to pretend is normal in the software industry, and 1 being a company that is exactly as heavyhanded about D&I as Google, that would be very helpful. Personal anecdotes and soft info about how you came to your decision would be appreciated as well. I’m particularly interested in Netflix, Facebook, Microsoft, and Dropbox. But there are lots of other good companies out there as well and I’d love to hear about them. Yes I have heard of konverged.com, and that’s a good resource, but trying to get more data.
My company give me vacation so I can go to the beach and become less pale. How absurd!
Good ad for your white supremacy website
It’s not my website. Just found it when searching the topic.
Holy crap so much text and I still have no idea what it is you want.
Most companies I’ve worked for in my 30 years did not value my contribution as much they did pale males. You really should have no problem at other companies unless you really are just mediocre. I see many people blaming their poor performance reviews on discrimination when it really is the fact their work is sub par. If you’re that good you should be welcomed at most companies.
The unintentional irony of this post is crushing me right now.
Alright, got three snarks from MS. I’m going to take those as data points. Keep ‘em coming!
I like the word Factitious. That was intentional, right?
What do you mean? Yes, I intentionally wrote the word factitious.
That’s a word worth taking off. would nominate it for word of the year.
You don't want to go to Salesforce.
OP big companies are doing it for 2 reasons: 1) their size makes them good political targets, and/or 2) they are run by stereotypical millenials like Zuck. #1 will be true for the remainder of your career, so you should expand your horizons beyond Tier-1. Amazon used to be 0.3, now is 0.6 on your scale (D&I pressure on managers). It may never get as bad as FB or Google - Jeff is seriously customer-obsessed, and has been making his billions without forced D&I just fine, for more than 2 decades.
Ok. Now that you’ve rated, Get your entitled ass back to work.
I've worked at all the companies you mentioned, none of them want you. They're all at least 90% as pc as Google.
