Why not just rent a car one way...?
It costs more
Sometimes and slightly...
Sounds like a good idea 💡 for a potential startup
It would fail because the demand imbalances are already priced in in the car rental price. If one way is expensive it means car is more needed at starting location. It also means, there will be much smaller group of people that would like to take it back there.
Aren’t both people going to need to be present at the rental car place for signatures do they are both allowed to drive? I mean, I assume you’re talking about a company that would just be the go-between and wouldn’t actually rent the cars...
Yes and No. once the pairing is established, then both the drivers can electronically sign the document. I have done this in the past. I took a car to LA and my friend got it back to SFO but it’s hard to find a friend who can do that all the time. So I was wondering if there could be a platform where riders could post their requests and have others accept those.
If car companies are making profit on these one way car rental ( i.e. they are able to charge one way rental fee to two separate customers, even if car ends up in the same place eventually without needing to transport them ), why would they facilitate any third party to come in between and take that profit away ?
Yeah, so a 3rd party would have to overcome drivers licence issues (both parties being present at checkout) permission for multiple drivers, which usually costs more, and insurance issues..what coverage applies in case of accident? Also I wonder if there is really enough demand to warrant this idea scaling....but maybe OP just wants to use such a service, not launch it.....:)
DocuSign has eliminated the need to be physically present anywhere to sign any document.
And yet not many people use it for anything important. Like closing on a house.
Yes and no. Car sharing companies are the closest to offering that, but certainly not at the economics of a traditional car rental company. Rental cars are still reeling from the ride share economy, so it's not implausible for them to make "innovations" like that going forward.
Many car companies do allow one way car rental and a site autoslash shows one way too
If you rent from airport to airport, you may not pay extras. This is what I did when picked from LAX and dropped in SFO from Avis
