It has the hardware and appropriate bands, it just needs to be whitelisted on ATTs network. Is this something that could happen?

The phone has the hardware capabilities to connect to ATTs 5G network, but ATT has to whitelist the model for it to work.
I've never heard of them having to whitelist a model. It's all about the band's. Once you get a connection with them, they don't care what model you use as long as your device supports those bands.
