Came across this - https://mashable.com/article/chatgpt-search-announcement-what-we-know article today and it totally makes sense. When they hired a couple of very senior (E8?) search engineers from Meta and G last year, I assumed it was to build better RAG. But it was to build a whole ass web search. GG Google?

I am genuinely surprised you said google search is good enough in 2024.
Google haters delude themselves that normal ppl care about Google alternatives or are bothered by seo or ads Dozens of attempts have fallen flat, neeva, pplx, bing with gpt. Ppl just don't care.
Doesn't bing have it since months ago?
Search is already a solved problem that google has a monopoly on. At this point search is “good enough”, so even if a better one comes along nobody is going to switch to it.
No ads and shitty sponsored results might be incentive enough
They already made a no ads no sponsored results Google search that you pay membership for. It got shut down because the guys wanted to do AI or some shit.
